In one of the first upsets of the 2019 postseason, No. 6 seed McCluer South-Berkeley defeated No. 3 seed Lutheran North 65-60 to move into the district semifinals against Soldan on Wednesday.
Here is a look at the top five performers from Monday night’s game:
Demondre Gunter 6’1″ McCluer South-Berkeley (’19): The talented combo guard scored 19 points, including six points in the final minute of the game to spark the upset for the Bulldogs. The smooth lefty has good handles and an excellent change of pace game to get to the basket and keep defenders off balance. He is a very good finisher in the lane with the ability to stop and pop from the mid range area.
Jack Buford 6’5″ Lutheran North (’19): The University of Missouri football recruit closed out his basketball career with a dominating performance in the paint. The 300+ pound offensive lineman used his size and physicality to control the offensive boards and finish around the basket. He has strong hands and catches the ball well in traffic.
Gerald Jackson 6’1″ McCluer South-Berkeley (’19): The senior guard finished with 12 points, all coming on his four 3-pointers in the second half. He was easily the top perimeter shooter in the game as he helped the Bulldogs come back from a third-quarter deficit with his outside shooting. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers from opposite wings in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs the lead to stay.
Tahj Patterson 6’1″ Lutheran North (’20): An athletic combo guard who is an excellent slasher who can finish well at the rim. He displayed an excellent knack for grabbing offensive rebounds from the guard position as he grabbed six of them on Monday, including three off of missed free throws. His handles are solid and he can knock down a mid-range jumper.
Torre McMiller 6’1″ McCluer South-Berkeley (’20): An undersized post player who scored 12 points and provided some good inside play for the Bulldogs. He is a blue-collar performer who battles hard for rebounds and plays the game with a high motor. He gets to the right spots and did a nice job of finishing around the basket.
