The double-header featured two spine-tingling finishes that resulted in one-point games. In the opener, Hazelwood Central defeated Bloomington (IL) 74-73. In the featured game, Vashon defeated Trinity 59-58 in a battle of Class 3 state powers who are prime contenders for the state championship.
Here is a look at the top individual performers from the Vashon Winter Classic:
Rashad Weekly 6’0″ (Trinity ’20): The thick-bodied combo guard enjoyed a huge offensive performance in helping the Titans to the near victory over Vashon. He scored a game-high 26 points and displayed scoring ability from all three levels. He hit a running 3-pointer from the left wing with four seconds left to give the Titans a 58-57 lead with four seconds left. He is a strong, physical guard who utilized his strength to power his way through contact to buckets. He loves to perform in the big games.
Kobe Clark 6’6″ (Vashon ’20): The versatile wing player was the difference in the game for Vashon in their dramatic victory over Trinity. He scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the Wolverines. He was an absolute beast on the offensive boards, where he consistently gave his teammates extra possessions with his high motor and effort. With his size and skill level, he is able to play virtually every position on the floor effectively.
Isaiah Ervin 6’2″ (Hazelwood Central ’19) – The slender shooting guard scored a game high 27 points to lead the Hawks to the dramatic last-second victory over Bloomington in the opening game. Ervin scored the game-winner with eight seconds left with a twisting layup in the lane. He is a smooth three-level scorer who is tough to defend when he is one his game because he can slash to the basket or pull up and knock down jumpers.
Cam’Ron Fletcher 6’7″ (Vashon ’20) -The explosive wing player scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Wolverines victory. He is one of the best in getting out in transition where he is an entertaining finisher with the thunderous slam dunk. He knocked down a couple of 3-pointers from the wing and also was a factor on the offensive boards, where the Wolverines had a big advantage.
Nate Duckworth 6’0″(Bloomington ’20): The talented combo guard scored a team-high 24 points and led his team back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to a near victory. He has excellent handles and passing ability, plus he can knock down 3-pointers with excellent consistency. He’s a tough kid who didn’t shy away from taking big shots.
Ryan Kalkbrenner 7’0″ (Trinity ’20) – The long and active young big was the top defensive player in the event with six blocked shots and many altered shots during the evening. His sense of timing to go along with his length makes him a tremendous shot blocker without fouling. He also blocked a mid-range jumper and a 3-point shot as well. He also has a soft touch around the basket.
