Marvin Bagley, the nations’ consensus No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2018, was not cleared to play by California Interscholastic Federation after transferring from Hillcrest Prep to Sierra Canyon, Cal. in late November, 2015. He was on the sidelines when Sierra Canyon appeared in Springfield at the Tournament of Champions.
This spring, however, the 6-foot-11 Bagley has been taking out his frustrations on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaging nearly 20 points per game to go along with 10.6 rebounds for Phoenix Phamily and has teamed with Cody Riley to form a tough 1-2 punch in the paint.
“It feels great to get back out on the court,” Bagley said. “This game is something that I love to do and is something I have been doing my whole life. Being able to do it is always fun. It is a great experience for me, being out in these sessions and playing the way that I play.
Marvin Bagley sat out the 2016 Tournament of Champions held in Springfield, Mo. after his transfer to Sierra Canyon. His high school team will be returning to the tournament in 2017.“I am grateful and blessed and thank God every day.”
Bagley is considered among the nation’s premier prospects in any class — a high level athlete with a long frame and the agility to play all over the court. Armed with a left handed shooting stroke, Bagley can dominate the game in the paint, but is skilled enough to step away from the basket and play on the wing.
He is teaming on Phoenix Phamily with three other players who played at Sierra Canyon, including Riley, Remy Martin and Adam Sieko. Mix in Bagley’s younger brother, 6-foot-5 rising freshman Marcus Bagley, and Phoenix Phamily is helping set the stage for a big season at Sierra Canyon.
“This is something that is going to help the chemistry, there are a couple guys on Phoenix Phamily that will be playing at Sierra Canyon, and we are getting close right now,” Bagley said. “When the season comes, we have to get everybody in the school involved and that will just come naturally.”
Bagley and Seirra Canyon will be featured in 2017 at the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, which will be played in Springfield. Sierra Canyon placed second in the event in 2016, falling on a buzzer beater to Oak Hill. Bagley said he is excited to return next season.
“I’m looking forward to any game we have, any game we have is going to be a good one for me,” Bagley said. “It was a great experience for me going the last time and to be able to play and get on the court it will probably be a lot more fun.
“I can’t wait for it.”
