Early on, it was all Troy as they were sharp on both ends and built a double-digit cushion for most of the first half. Priory settled down in the second half and made an inspired run, cutting the deficit to a single point with under 4 minutes to play. In the end, though, Troy pulled away for a 56-45 victory to claim the third place trophy. Here are the “Most Intriguing Prospects” from this exciting contest.
Priory:
6’1 Jr Charlie Ferrick
Charlie is averaging a team high 22 points per game for the Rebels and is a big reason why they are off to a 12-5 start. He was some of the only offense for Priory early on thanks to some crafty finishing ability driving to the rim. He had a nice spin and score followed up with a double clutch lay-up in the 1Q and followed that up with a tough pull-up bank shot to keep his team within striking distance. After having his eye split open by an elbow late in the 3Q, Charlie returned to the floor and promptly buried a huge three that got his team within 5 points for the first time since early in the 1Q.
6’5 Sr Nick Kurz
I came away very impressed with Rebel wing Nick Kurz. It seemed as if a lid was on the basket the entire first half as three after three rimmed out. He maintained his composure, didn’t get frustrated, and eventually got it going. He nearly helped his team to a come from behind win by burying two huge threes, one of which cut the deficit to 1 late in the game. He is tall and strong and likes to drive baseline to finish. He followed up his performance in the 3rd Place Game by winning the 3 Point Shootout, burying 12 of 15 attempts in 45 seconds.
6’7 So Harrison Wilmsen
Harrison is going to be a well-known name in the area by the time he finishes up at Priory. Standing 6’7 with impressive length, there are a lot of things to like already about his game. You could start with his season averages of 16 points and 9 rebounds per game. He got things going with a 12 foot baseline jumper and then started going to work around the rim. He is more finesse than power at this point but has nice elevation and touch on his jump hook. He positions himself well for lobs over the top and has a good looking rhythm at the free throw line. On the defensive end, he rebounds and protects the rim well for the Rebels
Troy:
6’6 Sr Jim King
It’s refreshing in today’s game to see a true back to the basket post player and Jim is just that. He is averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds per game for the Trojans, who have won 4 of 5 games. He gets a ton of block touches through the offense and is nearly automatic with his right hand. He has nice touch on the jump hook and uses the glass well. He can drop step and finish and has solid footwork with his spin back move that is hard to guard at his level. He put an end to Priory’s late run with a huge offensive rebound and put back finish to give his team a two possession lead. He had 18 points in the victory
6’0 So Griffin St. Pierre
Griffin is a dangerous threat from beyond the arc for the Trojans. Averaging 10.5 points per game on the season, he has a very quick release and is a lethal catch and shoot specialist. He hit a trifecta of deep daggers for Troy in the victory and showed the capability to put the ball on the floor and make plays when defenders look to take away his shot.
6’1 So Brendan Deters
Yes, there is another Deters at Troy, and yes he is good too. Brendan is putting up 10.6 points and over 3 assists per game for Troy so far this season. He is a heads up player that made some impressive passes against Priory. He is a physical driver who does not shy away from contact. He had three hard drives where he took some contact and was able to finish. He is also second on the team in three pointers made this year.
