But the Titans, trailing by eight late in the game, went on a 14-2 run to end the game defeating the Cavaliers 58-54 at the Corn Palace.
After one quarter, the Titans were leading 15-2 and went on to lead 20-2 before St. Thomas More scored with 6 minutes left in the half for their first points since the opening seconds of the game. The next 6 minutes was all about the Cavaliers, they outscored Tea Area 22-15 in the second quarter to only trail 30-24 at the half.
The Cavaliers took their first lead since the opening seconds, 33-32, with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Cavaliers would outscore the Titans 22-12 in the third quarter to take a 46-42 lead in the final quarter.
St. Thomas More scored with just under 6 minutes to play to give them their largest lead of the day at eight points. That would end up being the last time they would score a field goal as they tried to slow down the game. That would end up coming back to bite them as Tea Area turned up the intensity and went on a 14-2 run to end the game.
TURNING POINT: The Titans held the Cavaliers without a field goal the last 6 minutes of the game. They were able to make key buckets late in the game and came up big on the defensive side.
KEY PLAY: After a barrage of timeouts by both teams, Tea Area came away with a steal on the final play of the game to seal the victory.
HIGHLIGHT PLAY: Mason Ritter drove down the left lane and went up for a layup but at the last second used a wrap-around pass to Kaleb Joffer for an and-one to make it a one-point game late.
KEY STAT: The Cavaliers tried to slow the game down in the fourth quarter and it ended up backfiring as they didn’t make a shot from the field the last six minutes of the game.
TEAM STATS:
The Titans shot 36 percent from the field, 25 percent from deep and 73 percent from the line. As a team they had 37 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals.
The Cavaliers shot 38 percent from the field, 32 percent from deep and 63 percent from the line. As a team 33 boards, 9 assists and eight steals.
TEAM LEADERS:
Tea Area was led by Noah Freidel with 20 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists. Justin Hohn (8 points and 6 assists), Joffer (14 points and 6 rebounds), Kade Stearns (10 points) rounded out the Titans scoring.
St. Thomas More was led by Ryder Kirsch with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Caden Casey has 11 points and 4 assists and Michael Gylten had 10 points for the Cavaliers.
