Saturday’s Top Performers at the Pentagon: Hoop City Classic
The final day of high school action at the Hoop City Classic featured several great games, talents and celebrities.
Kansas head coach Bill Self made an appearance courtside at the Pentagon on Saturday afternoon after his No. 5 Jayhawks took care of business against Eastern Michigan, 87-63 Saturday morning.
Here are some of Saturday’s top performers at the Pentagon:
Akoi Akoi – Sioux Falls O’Gorman
The Knights big man came up big for his team throughout the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as Findlay Prep overpowered the Knights 77-60. Akoi had 18 points and 11 boards for SF O’Gorman and really stretched out the defense becoming a threat from deep.
PJ Fuller – Findlay Prep (Nev.)
As usual Fuller showed out for the South Dakota crowd. He had another great game against a solid team in SF O’Gorman. He put up 29 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the Pilots as they put away the Knights late 77-60.
Blaise Beauchamp – Findlay Prep (Nev.)
Not to be outdone by Fuller, Beauchamp had a quite the game himself as well. He had 24 points and 8 boards to help the Pilots pull away from SF O’Gorman late. He was a huge factor in the full court press they put on the Knights.
Matthew Hurt – Rochester John Marshall (Minn.)
The man Bill Self was supposedly there to watch didn’t disappoint the Hall of Famer. He was double even tripled team at most times and still managed to record 36 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Unfortunately, the next highest scorer for the Rockets was 10 points which was a huge reason why they lost 74-62 to Brandon Valley.
Carter Olthoff – Brandon Valley
Olthoff got off to a hot start in the first half (15 points in first 13 minutes) which helped Brandon Valley build and keep a comfortable lead over Matthew Hurt and Rochester John Marshall. He finished with 22 points and 7 rebounds for the Lynx.
Matthew Mors – Yankton
The standout sophomore fought foul trouble and helped his team with a huge upset over powerhouse DeLaSalle in overtime, 71-65. He picked up his second foul with six minutes left in the first half and sat most of the half after that. He then picked up his fourth foul with nine minutes left in the second half and sat until about the four-minute mark where he played the rest of the game. He finished with a double-double, 27 points and 11 boards.
Tyrell Terry – DeLaSalle (Minn.)
The Stanford commit was without George Washington signee Jamison Battle and almost willed his team to the win in OT against Yankton. He finished with 33 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
Noah Freidel – Tea Area
The star forward wasn’t afraid of going up against the No. 1 team in the nation and proved that he was a Division I athlete recording 33 points, 9 boards and 3 assists. He helped the Titans score 38 points in the second half and cut a 30-point lead to a final score of 78-64.
Isaiah Stewart – La Lumiere (Ind.)
The 6-foot-9, 245 pound forward was a man amongst boys against the Titans. He scored 15 points, 11 rebounds and had 4 blocks. He didn’t disappoint the crowd throwing up dunks and alley-oops in warmups before the game.
Wendall Green – La Lumiere (Ind.)
Green led the No. 1 team in the nation in scoring on the final day with 23 points and had 7 rebounds. He frustrated Tea Area’s guards on the defensive side all night long.
Ben Jelacic – Dominican (Wis.)
After a rough game the day before against Yankton, Dominican got back in the win column against Sioux Falls Washington, 61-52. Jelacic had 27 points and 16 rebounds to lead Dominican on the final day.
