GCL-South Conference Preview: Who Can Contend With Moeller?

For the second straight season the Moeller Crusaders finished the regular-season undefeated in league play and made a 2^nd straight trip to Columbus that ended with the 4^th state title in school history. Can Moeller make it three straight years undefeated in GCL play? That question gets answered and more in our GCL-South 2018-19 Preview.

What will it take for Moeller to repeat?

Unless the injury bug hits this team, there is no reason to think that the Crusaders will repeat as league champions. And they go undefeated. And again it will not be close.

Who are the biggest challengers to Moeller’s crown?

No one, and we are just being honest.

Who is/are the dark horse team(s) in the league?

With most teams in the league so senior dominated last season, their will be a lot of roster turnover for every team. But if we had to go with one team it would be St. Xavier for the 2^nd straight season. They have the leading returning scorer in the league in 2019 G Nathan Stockman (12.4ppg 2017-18) along with 2019 C Luke Pellot (6’7) who twice went for double digits off the bench last season.

Who will lead the league in scoring?

This category will belong to West Virginia commit Miles McBride (2019 PHO #4). While being a three-level scorer, he has the best mid-range game in Cincinnati and will fill the void left by Hargrave Military’s Jeremiah Davenport as the big-shot taker for Coach Kremer squad.

Who will lead the league in rebounding?

It’s not often that a sophomore cracks the line-up for Moeller, in particular a sophomore big. I mean even Texas center Jaxson Hayes didn’t start until his senior season. But that is going to change this season as 2021 C Logan Duncomb (PHO #5) will not only start but lead the conference in rebounding. It was a close call between Duncomb and the before mentioned Luke Pellot of St. X, but Duncomb is a better rebounder outside his area and also has better hands than Pellot.

Who will be the league Player of the Year?

While there could be some competition from teammate Alec Pfreim (Bellarmine commit), Miles McBride should easily breeze to this award. He is the best player on the best team in the league. Enough said.

Who are the league’s breakout candidates?

For this category we are going with the before mentioned Logan Duncomb. He had a very good showing at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo in September and is already on the radar of multiple regional D-I programs. As mentioned earlier Duncomb is a very good rebounder, especially on the offensive boards, has good hands and stays within himself. The latter being something important for a underclassmen, particularly when on a veteran team.
