Continue ReadingA smooth left handed guard, Poplar Bluff 2019 Marcedus Leech is helping lead a grossly talented St. Louis Eagles 16U team this summer.
Leech already holds offers from Mizzou, Vanderbilt, Missouri State and New Mexico State and his star figures to only continue to rise this summer as he competes with the Eagles.
Leech is slenderly built in the same mold as Larry Hughes and Jamal Crawford, but is strong enough to get to the bucket at will off the dribble. He has a smooth perimeter jumper with range well beyond the 3-point arc and is a terrific passer, setting up a talented front line that includes James Wiseman and Francis Okoro and others with pinpoint lobs. But his best trait might be his ability to break down defenders off the dribble. Leech is a talented and create ball handler with the ability to create for himself or others.
After moving to Poplar Bluff from Jonesboro, Ark., Leech took the varsity scene by storm as a ninth grader, scoring 22 points in his first game against DeSoto and went on to average 21.7 points for a team that went 17-10. He averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.6 steals, shot better than 51 percent from the field, and led the team with 84 3-pointers.
In a testament to his outside shooting touch, Leech shot 43 percent from long distance.
“I’m am a scorer, a play maker and a great team player,” Leech said.
After playing last year with WACG out of Nashville, Tenn., Leech has hit the ground running in his first summer with St. Louis Eagles 16U and says he has built a strong relationship with fellow 2019 Eagles, Wiseman and Okoro, both on and off the court.
“It’s just a honor to be able to represent my hometown and run with the Eagles,” Leech said. “Playing with them two bigs is the best, they’re like my two best friends. We enjoy playing with each other I have known francis since last year with WACG and me and him clicked from then .
“Me and James got close fast thats my dude but we just love playing together. It’s going to be a fun summer.”
Leech said his biggest influence on his game and life is his mother and coach Don Webb.
“She works a lot, and she’s been working and been a single mom doing it all,” he said. “I just want her to just enjoy the rest of her life without working when I make it where I want to be.
“And coach Webb, he pushing me to be the best he get on to me but it’s for the best and he’s a great influence in my life.
On the court, Leech looks up to Houston Rockets guard James Harden and patterns his game after the fellow left hander. He says he still has plenty to work on, including adding some bulk to his 155-pound frame.
“During the offseason I am working on my body, and a lot of ball handling and shooting drills,” he said.
