A Scout’s Take: Ron Massey FHC (Forwards/Centers/Part 1)
NORWALK, Ca.—Dinos Trigonis, one of the pronounced Grassroots pioneers, orchestrated yet another epic Fall Hoops Classic—now named after former Long Beach Jordan Head Coach Ron Massey.
In a field that was loaded with much of Southern California’s elite programs, it would be Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) that would bag the championship with impressive wins over Harvard-Westlake, Mater Dei, and Bishop Montgomery. Bishop Gorman’s electrifying junior Noah Taitz would bring home the MVP as he lit up the score board in a variety of ways.
Will Crawford (Bishop Montgomery)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultimate glue-guy for one of the elite teams in the West. Last season he was a grinder at both ends of the floor. Now he has become a knock down shooter from deep to go along with all the other intangibles he exhibits on the floor.
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: This pick-and-pop 4-man plays beyond his youth. His physicality is impressive with his ability to screen, carve out space in the paint, and yet knock in deep jump shots. His face-up skills have improved as well where he showed off a quick 1st step off the bounce and the explosiveness to finish above the rim. Not too mention his passing prowess is a thing of beauty.
Isaiah Mobley (Rancho Christian)
2019, PF, 6-foot-9, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mobley, who is committed to USC, should make a serious run at a McDonald’s bid with an expected dominant season. The point forward skill set has always been a part of his package, but it’s his improved finishing ability and foot work that has caught our eye. He can knock in jump shots, deliver timely passes off the bounce, and convert shots in the paint due to his skill and savvy.
Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian)
2020, PF, 6-foot-10, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: What makes Mobley special and unique is his ability to affect the game in a number of ways. He is long, bouncy, quick, and possesses God-given instincts. Whether it’s a timely block in the paint, a deep 3, or a nifty pass to an open teammate—he can do it all.
Isaiah Cottrell (Bishop Gorman/NV)
2020, PF, 6-foot-9, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more improved “Bigs” on the West Coast is Cottrell. The bouncy 4-man has excellent inside-out touch and has become stronger and more assertive in the paint in the past year. He can nail the elbow jump shot, finish on the break with a dunk, or convert shots with either hand.
