A talented 5-foot-10 guard, Jones went for 15 points and five rebounds in an overtime loss to Vashon the semfiinals, then added seven points in the third-place game on Saturday. Jones said he looks up to the Portland Trailblazer point guard Damian Lillard, who came from Weber State and tries to pattern his game after the all-star.
“He came from a small college and wasn’t very well known and he ended up being the sixth pick in the draft and an All-Star,” Jones said. “I’m a scorer but I also try to get my teammates into the game.”
Jones played in every varsity game as a freshman and averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds. He was among the team’s top 3-point shooters and 37 percent and helped lead the squad to a 28-3 record and a Final Four appearance.
“It felt good going to the Final Four my freshman year, growing up watching my family member made me hungry to work hard and get there,” Jones said.
Jones said he will be playing for the St. Louis Eagles on the AAU circuit, and is looking forward to a big off season.
“This is my first year playing with them,” he said. “Competing during the off season has had a major change on my game because of the great talent you go against.
“(During) the offseason I’m going to work on my shot, getting stronger and quicker.”
Jones recently picked up a scholarship offer from Jacksonville State and says Mizzou has shown interest.
Jones said playing alongside one of the state’s top players in the 2018 class, Fred Thatch, has helped his game grow.
“The biggest influence in my game has to be my old coach Don Webb — and teammate Fred Thatch,” Jones said. “Them two have always believed me and pushed me to get better every single day.”
