Freshman Showcase Recap: Team 5 Evals

This past Saturday was the annual Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase. We had nearly 80 players show up for the event to test their skills and get on the radar as they prep for their freshman year. We will be doing evaluations for each team at the event. Here is the breakdown of team five. Keep an eye out for more evaluations as we get you a look at every player from the showcase.    Alo is a quick little guard who showed he can turn on the jets and push the ball to attack slow setting defenses in transition. Utilized that quickness to get into gaps, get to the rim, and create some drive and kick looks. Played in good defensive position too, understanding where to be one or two passes away, being engaged and ready to make plays.     Johnson stood out for his excellent work rate and ability to apply pressure to ball handlers on the perimeter. Has the lateral burst to stop ball handlers from getting into gaps, pickup full court, and showed the quick hands to rack up some deflections. Did well to turn defense into quick offense too and was willing to make the extra pass.     Short played with a good base and a readiness off the ball that helped in get into good spots and attack quickly off the catch. Had some strong finishes thanks to that good base and a willingness to run the floor. Showed he can finish off a break or find a key pass on the run to fill multiple spots in transition.     Here is a long perimeter player who constantly found his way to the hoop. Was a factor in transition with his smooth gait and ability to get down the court with or without the rock. Also showed the ability make one strong move on the perimeter and get down lanes to the rim. Used that length to make a couple highlight defensive plays as well.     Drinkwater was a good mover without the ball which helped set up a number of his buckets. Knew when to push and pull off the ball, knocked in a few corner threes off the catch, and made some great cuts off of offensive rebounds to capitalize on defensive confusion and score quick buckets.     Loved his toughness and mindset at the showcase. Montenegro displayed a solid handle to create separation with his crosses and pullbacks, but also put that toughness on display with some strong bumps on drives to separate and score. He stood out as a high-level competitor.     Lane is a strong kid who was able to work out of different spots but consistently ended up around the paint to use his size and skill to score. Had the footwork from the blocks to score off post catches, showed soft touch on some turnaround shots in the short to midrange, and played tough on the glass on both ends. Was confident in his strength advantage over a lot of matchups which allowed him to be patient and not rush touches in close.     Woodland was another kid who showed some good poise under the rim with defenders around him. Utilized his pump fakes and pivots well to get space underneath and had a good awareness of how to use the rim to counter shot blockers. He was one of the better 50/50 ball kids at the showcase, whether that was chasing down long rebounds, saving balls from going out of bounds, or rushing to scoop up loose balls.     Jome played with a bunch of energy throughout the day and was able to get involved in a lot of areas. Played with pace in transition and did a great job attacking with a purpose which allowed him to get angles on unsure defenders in transition. Made some great crashes on the offensive glass and shot it pretty well from outside.     Shelton played with some reckless abandon attacking the rim, showing some high level aggression to squirt through gaps and get to the hoop. He was quick to get going on his catches and caught his defender lacking with a good first step and some nice counters.     Barquet showed some good feel for making key lead passes and seemed to see over the defense pretty well from different spots. Has the potential to be a solid shooter and looked pretty smooth on some makes from behind the arc. Had some good spurts of high activity as well, rebounding, contesting shots, and cutting off the ball.
