Weider is known as a premier outside shooter, says he is working on becoming known as an all-around player.
“I would like to say my game is all around: I’m not just a scorer or a shooter,” he said. “Scoring is a big part to an all around game but defense makes a complete player. I play the 1 or 2 guard the most but I can slide over if necessary to make a mismatch.
“I’m working on my defense and ball handling. Defense makes or breaks your game and strong ball handling is key for my position.”
So far this season he is averaging 34.4 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.7 steals. Perhaps more importantly, he has helped lead the Eagles to a 7-1 start to the season.
Weider said his favorite player is Steph Curry and he also likes legendary shooters Reggie Miller and Larry Bird. He said overall though his game has been influenced most by his older brothers and family.
“At home, my big brothers and my mom have influenced me the most,”Weider said. “My Mom has always given me the chance to follow my dream. My oldest brother, Jared, has worked with me since I was four and has encouraged me every step of the way. I always say Jared is my coach and my chauffeur to the basketball games.”
Weider said several out-of-state and local coaches have spoken with his high school and summer coaches, but he hasn’t had any direct contact yet. He spent the summer playing with the Adidas Gateway Basketball Club in St. Louis.
“Gateway has helped my game immensely,” he said. “My defense has expanded to a whole new level and they have taught me to make better decisions during games. I have defended and held my own against some of the best 15 year olds in the nation. Gateway Basketball Club is great because it has expanded my skills at basketball, assists with colleges and stresses education.”
Weider said he has been a part of a travel team since he was 4 years old, first with teams around home, then started playing MAYBE traveling basketball with a team based in Springfield.
He has played true AAU basketball since the seventh grade on teams based in St. Louis.
“The biggest difference I have found the last several years is the speed of the game is faster,” Weider said. “AAU basketball is a different style of play when compared to high school play because it is more competitive and it requires a mental toughness. AAU basketball has helped me be more versatile, blending AAU style of basketball with small conference play.”
