Magic Memorial: 16u Guard Standouts

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>ORANGE, Calif. — The annual Compton Magic Memorial Day event featured a strong contingent of local programs and prospects from the classes of 2026 through 2029. We took in two days worth of action over the holiday weekend at Orange Lutheran high school and below are the standout guard performers from the 16u level.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">[player_tooltip player_id='2746605' first='Jaizahn' last='Lewis'] | 2028 | Dream Vision</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Lewis is a dynamic open court scorer and playmaker who was effective in transition settings with his quick twitch change of speed and direction allowing him to get into the lane and finish at the rim. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is an aggressive and confident attacker of the basket who can also knock down off-bounce jumpers.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">[player_tooltip player_id='2689698' first='Kaden' last='Vales'] | 2028 | Jaylen Wells Elite</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Vales struck a good balance between looking for scoring opportunities and being a playmaker for teammates in transition and half-court offense. The 6-footer was efficient in his shot selection and off-ball movement within the flow of the Jaylen Wells Elite offense and took the open catch and shoot three when it was there but was also smart about reversing the ball to keep the opposing defense working.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Matt Bernal | 2028 | Gamepoint</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Bernal is a crafty and high IQ point guard who operated with impressive pace, a high basketball IQ and timely and accurate passing ability. The 6-foot-3 sophomore out of Corona Santiago can dictate a fast-paced, transition style of play and can slow the tempo down to run half-court offense. Bernal is a guy who earns paint touches, stays on balance through contact and finds open teammates or finishes with a soft-touched floater.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">[player_tooltip player_id='2412268' first='Maurice' last='Carter II'] | 2028 | Compton Magic</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Carter brought high levels of energy to both ends of the floor for Compton Magic and his most impressive trait was his disruptive defensive ability. The lightning quick and hyper-athletic 6-foot point guard is a player who can pressure 94-feet, turn ball-handlers multiple times before half-court and uses his quick hands to pick pockets and get deflections. Offensively, Carter can do a little bit of everything but is best as a downhill attacker who puts pressure on the rim in transition and half-court offense.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Micah Cunningham | 2028 | Gamepoint</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Cunningham has shown a ton of improvement since the end of the high school season and looked very comfortable as a primary scorer over the weekend. The 6-foot-4 off-guard has a long and wiry-strong frame, simple but effective ball-handling skills and uses his long strides to get past defenders and into the paint for at-rim finishes. Cunningham also looked comfortable pulling up off the bounce for mid-range jumpers.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">[player_tooltip player_id='3531701' first='Nalu' last='Clark'] | 2029 | California Gold</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Clark brought true point guard feel and organizational qualities to his team that led to a lot of winning plays throughout the weekend. The 6-foot-1 freshman is smooth, savvy and smart with the ball in his hands, uses change of speed and direction to keep defenders off-balance and plays off of two feet and pivots to slow the game down when he gets paint touches. Clark is an offensive orchestrator with a high basketball IQ and an unselfish approach to the game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
