Top players from Day 1 of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic
Day one of the 2018 Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic is in the books. This classic gives fans, and other spectators a chance to see some of the best talent in the state of Tennessee in one gym before the high school basketball season kicks off during the 2018-19 school year.
There were talent all over the floor from each team at Memphis University School in Memphis, Tennessee, but, there were four performers that stood out from the rest of the clan in my opinion.
Here are the standouts I choose as the top performers from day one of the Jerry Peters Memphis Summer Classic:
- Forward Kamron Jones, Southwind: He posted 21 points, five rebounds, and one assist in an 87-70 loss to Center Hill in the Jaguars first game of the day. He followed up that performance with a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in a 43-39 loss to Riverdale.
- Guard/forward Alden Applewhite, Lausanne: He posted 23 points, five rebounds, and two assists in a 64-50 loss to Brentwood Academy. In the team’s second game, Applewhite finished with six points, four rebounds, and four assists in a 68-66 win against Hillsboro.
- Forward Malcolm Dandridge, East: The senior post player added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in a close win against Brentwood Academy Eagles, 51-48. With the score knotted at 48-all, senior guard Darrion Merriweather threw up a heave, uncontested, with 0.5 seconds left on the clock, which hit the bottom of the net to give the Mustangs the final edge. He finished with seven points, two rebounds, and two assists. Senior guard Antonio Thomas added nine points, four rebounds, and four assists. James Wiseman, the No. 1 prospect in the 2019 class, didn’t play due to a groin injury. Highly-rated Tennessee prospects Chandler and Johnathan Lawson also didn’t play.
- Junior guard Marcus Fitzgerald, Brentwood Academy: He set the tone early for the Eagles’ offense, keeping his team in the fight against East with his outside shooting. Fitzgerald added 16 points and one rebound. His teammate, sophomore guard/forward Randy Brady, added 14 points, two rebounds, and one assist.
