Spring Stock Risers: Kansas City ’19 (Guards)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Several Kansas City area players have stood out this spring and raised their profile as they head into June with their high school teams.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several 2019 guards who stood out at the grassroots tournaments we attended.
Javaunte Hawkins, 5’10, G, 2019, Lee’s Summit North, MoKan Elite
Hawkins first spring running with MoKan Elite has seen him take on a reserve role in the MoKan backcourt and has made 12 3-pointers in 15 games on the circuit. He brings terrific quickness, is a solid perimeter shooter and is capable of scoring at all three levels.
Mikel Henderson, 6’0, G, 2019, Lee’s Summit North, KC Spurs
Henderson hasn’t really gotten a lot of hype this spring as the Spurs have a host of players who deserve some love, but he has proven to be a solid ball handler, a competitor and a solid defender. He’s capable of playing off the ball or handling the point guard duties and can knock down perimeter shots.
Ahmad Louis, 6’1, G, 2019, Oak Park, Marcus Denmon
Louis was kind of in the background at Oak Park this season as there were a host of talented upperclassmen who largely led the way last season, but he’s showing this spring that his time is coming. Louis brings terrific speed, quickness and playmaking abilities to the floor and can score buckets in the paint as he is able to get to the basket off the bounce.
Glen McClintock, 6’2, G, Rockhurst, KC Team Rush
McClintock has always been known for his ability to shoot and score, but he has taken his game to another level this spring and he has shown the ability to get to the basket and score in a variety of ways, becoming a more well-rounded, all-around guard.
DeAndre Sorrells, 5’11, G, 2019, Grandview, MoKan Elite
Sorrells has established as an elite level shooter this spring, capable of lighting up a scoreboard from behind the 3-point arc. He combines a quick, relaxed delivery with the ability to handle the ball, and defeat pressure. In 15 league games with MoKan, Sorrells has connected on 26 3-pointers and is shooting 38 percent from behind the arc. He is averaging 6.1 points per game.
