Recruiting Report: Sam Devault (2019)
One of the biggest trends over the last few years has been the development of the stretch four. Players are becoming more skilled and the ability to stretch the floor and present space on the offensive end. One of the better options in Indiana for 2019 is Evansville Memorial’s Sam Devault.
Devault, a 6’9 forward, is a really intriguing prospect as he’s very adept as a shooter from distance and can move well enough to be a solid defensive player with time. He’s more of a guy, right now, that is going to look to shoot off the catch but still can move to create. He’s a bit thin right now but he’s grown so much the last few years he’s still catching up. The ball handling, though, is his ticket to the next round of development.
During the high school season, he was showing a lot more ability at driving towards the rim and getting more comfortable with that. If he does get there, that could be enough to really draw in a new level of school.
To date, Devault has offers from Western Illinois and IUPUI who offered last year. Now, playing his summer ball with UA Grind 2019, he’s picked up some new interest from Northern Kentucky and Austin Peay, both of which he will look to get on campus here shortly.
Sam has been a growing talent for some time now and he’s at the point where he’s working to break through. Stretch fours can be a tricky development but Sam got to a point pretty early on where he was a productive player, and not worried about his athleticism or comfort along the perimeter. Now, he’s looking to take a new step forward and if the type of skill we saw this winter translates to the AAU game, that could go a long way.
