After an outstanding showing at Well Fargo Arena last March during the state tournament, Aplington-Parkersburg point guard Nick Waller went from a known 2016, to a budding star.
But since he’s been playing baseball and golf — and hasn't seen much of the hardwood.
Though he’s a very talented point guard – maybe one of 2A’s best – Waller says he’s likely to play golf in college — at least that’s how he feels right now.
“I’m looking around right now; I like UNI they have a good business school. Playing basketball I think would be fun too. Some golf coaches have talked with me and want me to come look at the campus, but no offers or anything, I’d be a walk on,” said Waller, who also mentioned baseball and football could be options for him tom at the next level.
“My dad kicked at UNI so I would definitely walk on somewhere and try and kick.”
Though golf is at the top of the 5-foot-11 senior’s list of sports right now, he’s keeping his options open, and says some area Division III schools have contacted him.
“Some schools like Wartburg, and a lot of the other D3 schools have been in contact with me,” said Waller. “But nothing major.”
Though he spent his offseason golfing and playing baseball, he was able to get into the gym and run with his teammates a bit.
“I was getting in the gym with some of the teammates sometimes, we went to a couple team camps, and worked on ball-handling and got up and down a little bit,” said Waller, who is hungry to try and get back to Des Moines again this March, even without 2015 star forward Ross Cooper.
“Ross is a big loss and we were a couple offensive rebounds away from a state title. That’s definitely sticking with us, we know what we have to do to get back to Des Moines, and I think we can play with about anyone in the state.”

NORWALK — Dual-sport Aplington-Parkersburg star Nic Waller started 25 games and batted .366 as a freshman on the varsity team last summer, and he followed that up with a very nice sophomore campaign on the hardwood.
We caught uo with the 5-foot-10 guard at the Norwalk Team Camp, and he told us baseball is his best sport but basketball is still important to him.
“Perfect Game (baseball) is what I'm mostly in this summer,” said Waller. “I don't really have the time for AAU (basketball), but I'd get in it if I could.”
The A-P starting guard says he'll probably pursue baseball in college, but that it will ultimately hinge on what schools end up up offering.
So far, Upper Iowa and some Division III schools have been sending him letters for hoops, and he's getting some letters from Missouri for baseball.
Although he's spent most of his summer on the diamond, he's still been working on his hoops game when he can.
“Shooting drills and defense, but defense mostly,” said Waller. “Just moving my feet and staying in front of people.”
Waller and the Falcons were one of the better teams at the Norwalk Team Camp and will look to improve upon last year's 8-14 finish.
They return their top four scorers.
“We're looking to make a state tournament run,” said Waller. “I think the conference is up for grabs.”
