After earning a spot on the five man all state team as a freshman and guiding his North Dakota Phenom team to the top of the 16U level polls in the spring and summer DeSean Allen-Eikens earned some calls from the likes of Stanford, San Diego State, and Utah in addition to his offer from the University of North Dakota.
Last month De'Sean gave his national stock a boost by earning one of the four MVP trophies at the Pangos Best of the Midwest event held just under three weeks ago. Allen-Eikens played in the freshman/sophomore top 30 game and impressed all the scouts in attendance.
How did that help De'Sean? All the reports and video from that Midwest event (which was loaded with talent) have circulated to many college programs and the word is spreading about the talent from Williston, North Dakota.
DeSean will be the first to mention that there are things he needs to work on to improve so he can be the player he wants to be at the next level. That said, he has shown the potential as a wing in a 6-foot-6 frame so more schools are calling.
PHD learned yesterday that Minnesota is now in contact and would like to see De'Sean in some way (visit there, visit in Williston, at a game, etc) in the near future. Oregon also has been in contact with De'Sean as of yesterday.
The high school coach at Williston has heard from Nebraska in the past 24 hours pertaining to De'Sean and now Oregon State has expressed interest and is expected to hear from De'Sean very soon (schools can't call him but he can call them after he learns of the interest that comes from mail and several other ways).
August 11th, 2015 Update
De’Sean Allen-Eikens. Basketball has taken the young man all over this great country. Only 15 years of age, De’Sean has been at camps and tournaments in just about every part of America.
This summer he’s competed on the west coast at the Pangos events, was in Milwaukee for the NY2LA tournament, and finished things up with some strong performances in Las Vegas. In that time De’Sean has seen much growth.
“Well, for one I'm an official 6-foot-6 and some change. But the off-season (of Grassroots basketball) made me more versatile I didn't (just) play the three. It was a one through five thing for me,” De’Sean explained.
De’Sean loves the travel of basketball. He hits the road to compete against anybody and everybody competing at the 16 and Under level despite being a 2018 class of talent.
“I like competition (of Grassroots basketball) and I hate losing,” he said. “That's why last year I worked on handles and jumping to be better. While this year it's going to be jump shooting and watching tape to learn how to play the one (point guard). And I want to get on the national level.”
The Williston Coyotes won just four games last winter so everything ahead of them is on the way up. De’Sean was named all-state after putting up 22.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game according to the WDA stats over 22 games.
“Well I don't know what kind of pieces we will have but from the looks it's going to be better,” Allen said. “I would like to play the 1-2 so I can show people the kind of work I'm putting in from July to December.
“This winter I want to make state and show the eastern side of the state what the west side already knows. And I want a ring.”
Recruiting is of course is in the very early stages but De’Sean already has a division one offer from North Dakota plus interest from North Dakota State, South Dakota, San Diego State, Stanford, Utah, Colorado, and several others.
“Recruiting hasn't changed that much to be honest, many of the same schools” De’Sean said.
July 2 (2015) Update
DeSean Allen-Eikens was named to the five man North Dakota all state team as a freshman. He made the top 40 all state game at the Crossroads Elite Invitational event a couple weeks ago which had some of the best young talent in the expanded middle portion of the country.
DeSean was invited back to the Pangos All American Camp this summer. His team is 11-6 and ranked number one in PHD 16U rankings through four events and ready to head to the Adidas Invitational in Indy, the Vegas Fab 48, and Cream of the Crop in California this summer to improve on that record.
Not to mention he recently received his first division one scholarship offer. Things are good for strong wing DeSean Allen-Eikens but the young man wants more.
I've played ok so far this (Grassroots) season,” DeSean said. “You know people tell me I'm hard on myself. As a team we've done well but we could do more. I’m looking forward to July.”
July is here and DeSean, although only a freshman, could continue to add scholarship offers playing at big national events at the 16U level as a recent freshman (most at the 16U level are sophomores).
“I'm happy to get the offer from the University of North Dakota and I think UND is a great school,” DeSean said.
The offer from UND was a long time in the making. There are other schools showing interest in DeSean but keep in mind, the process of where he will go to school has just begun. The young talent has three years of high school basketball left.
“Schools that have shown interest recently is Stanford. Utah invited me to elite camps and I think that's it right now.”
For the time being but PHD knows that DeSean is on the list of several schools around the country at the low major, mid major, and high major levels.
April 2015 update
Six-foot-6 wing De’Sean Allen-Eikens had a very rare freshman year. He was named all state by several places after putting up 23 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.
De’Sean cares mostly about winning though and a four win season has left a bad taste in his mouth.
“Well ultimately the season went not very good, “ said DeSean. “My team won three games on the season. My top moment was scoring 36 on Dickinson and winning!”
De’Sean put up 13 of 22 shooting that night making four treys and collecting 14 rebounds. On the other side of things that night Aanen Moody made eight treys and grabbed 11 boards for 33 points.
The explosive scoring pair are now playing together on the North Dakota Phenom and they won three games this weekend at the Battle of the Lakes and lost a pair of close contests to the teams that finished first and second.
Next up for the Phenom is the Kingwood Classic in Houston, the Fury Shootout in Apple Valley, the Northstar Hoops Report State Tournament in Minneapolis, and four summer tournaments traveling to Iowa, Indiana, California, and Las Vegas.
What are the goals for DeSean this summer?
“I want to be the best player in the country. I want to win. And I still will be with North Dakota Phenom,” DeSean said a few weeks ago when asked about his Grassroots season.
This weekend the Dakota D1 schools made a trip to watch De’Sean play. Who is hearing from most often?
“I’m hearing from the University of North Dakota the most.”
