Five Takeaways: Bishop Chatard vs. Covenant Christian
Early on, this was a back and forth affair as both teams traded blows in the first quarter. However, the second quarter laid way for a much slower and methodical pace to give Chatard a lead at halftime, 32-29. Then it continued for Covenant, but not Chatard. Covenant scored a combined 10 points in the second and third quarters before finally falling to Bishop Chatard, 66-45. Edreece Redmond and Cody Albin each finished with 16 points each.
Bishop Chatard Could Have Solid Season
One of the biggest questions coming into this game for us was if Chatard was going to be for real. They do look much improved from a year ago and they have some reliable scorers like Edreece Redmond and Cooper Lewis. Cody Albin was good I’m the post and have them a different look at times. Now, while vastly improved, this team still had a lot of wholesale. The pace struggled without Redmond in the game and I’m not sure if the shooters can get open looks without screens. However, if all is working for them, they can play above their level and have a really good season with some more big wins.
Covenant Christian Has Some Toughness
If this team was at full strength, you would see it even more but even without Jordan Webb, Covenant Christian has that gritty toughness you love to see. What is great is that you already see it in their freshman Trey Flatt. He along with Sam Fulbright and Josiah Grant are all really tough and don’t give an inch in any play. They need Webb to have enough offense to win games like these and they usually do because they just play tougher than opponents.
Future Of Bishop Chatard Could Be Even Better
Last night, we saw how this team looks this season. We also saw just how good they could be in a year as guys like Edreece Redmond, Sam Richey, Cooper Lewis, and Mitchell Ayers were among some of the better players. Redmond and Richey are both sophomores and Lewis and Ayers are juniors. They will lose some key pieces in Kole Kerr and Cody Albin but the majority of their talent should be back and if they develop at a decent rate, this team could be better in a years time.
Holy Cross Is Getting Tough Post In Albin
Early this year, Bishop Chatard (IN) post Cody Albin committed to Holy Cross out of South Bend, Indiana. Getting a look at him last night, they are getting a 6’6 220 post player with solid footwork and a solid scoring ability in the low block area. He’s not overly mobile but his footwork allows him to put the ball on the floor a bit to create and he’s adept at using his body to gain space down low. Showed some solid rebounding ability in his area and if he can gain a little more strength, his post scoring should be useful at the next level.
Both Teams Face Big Tests Next
For Bishop Chatard, they hit the heart of their schedule with Guerin Catholic coming up this weekend. It’s a winnable game for them but not even close to a given as Guerin, even in a down year, is still very good. They will need to pick up a win or two that they probably shouldn’t to guarantee this year as a success but they are heading the right direction. For Covenant Christian, they may or may not have Jordan Webb back and they will need him as they look to take on Heritage Christian. Heritage Christian looks solid again this year with a veteran group. Give them an advantage and they are plenty capable of winning.
