Class 2A Quarterfinals

Peco 51, Mora 33

Standout Players: [player_tooltip player_id='2827281' first='Armando' last='Bustos'] scored 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed 6 rebounds to lead Pecos past Mora. [player_tooltip player_id='2827274' first='Kevin' last='Vigil'] had 12 points and 3 rebounds. [player_tooltip player_id='2833734' first='Antonio' last='Garcia'] scored 19 points for Mora but got little support from his teammates.

Key Stat: The two key storylines from this game were Pecos' sizzling second half shooting and their suffocating defense. After building a 22-11 halftime lead, Pecos shot 57.1 percent (12-21) in the second half. Defensively, they held Mora to 28.6 percent shooting (10-35).

How It Happened: This was methodical in every way. Peco led the entire way and was never seriously threatened after halftime. Pecos led, 15-4, after the 1st quarter, 22-11 at halftime and 33-20 after three quarters.

https://youtu.be/1kDFBfyf8g4?si=rMLPbjBSns8Go68C

Santa Rosa 44, Rehoboth Christian 41

Standout Players: [player_tooltip player_id='2827272' first='Maddox' last='Lucero'] led Santa Rosa with 13 points while [player_tooltip player_id='2827293' first='Josh' last='Cordova'] added 12. Cordova also had a team-high 7 rebounds. [player_tooltip player_id='2827325' first='Trajen' last='West'] kept Rehoboth Christian in the game by scoring 21 points, including 4 3-pointers. Kristian Touchline scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for Rehoboth.

Key Stat: This game was about the second half. Santa Rosa trailed, 28-23, after 16 minutes but controlled the second half, limiting Rehoboth Christian to 13 points and just four field goals on 16.7 percent shooting.

How It Happened: In a defensive struggle, Santa Rosa trailed 35-31 entering the fourth quarter but used a 7-0 run to take a 38-37 lead with just over 5 minutes remaining. A Lions free throw with 10.2 seconds left gave them a 44-41 lead and handed Rehoboth Christian an opportunity to tie the game. But they missed a potential game-tying 3-point attempt.

https://youtu.be/701fgNUH_mQ?si=5wwe8QgOjK2JzFWH

Texico 61, Jal 37

Standout Players: [player_tooltip player_id='2818681' first='Alex' last='Fuentes'] led Texico, the #1 seed, with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and 5 rebounds. Curtis Jett added 14 points and [player_tooltip player_id='2818730' first='Steen' last='North'] had 10. Nolbert Cervantes was Jal's only offensive weapon, scoring 17 points (nearly half his team's total) and connecting on 4 3-pointers.

Key Stat: After a closely contested first half, Texico outscored Jal, 18-5, in the third quarter to gain control. Eventually, they outscored Jal, 34-11, in the second half to pull away. Texico shot 52.0 percent (13-25) while limiting Jal to 14.3 percent (3-21) in the second half.

How It Happened: Ahead 39-31 late in the third quarter, Texico went on a 12-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to pull away. Jal's 3-pointer stopped the bleeding, if only temporarily. But by then it was too late.

https://youtu.be/kTnVPe88jzE?si=twVTVBwL2YkLyT8o

Mesa Vista 58, Legacy Academy 32

Standout Players: [player_tooltip player_id='2827164' first='Santiago' last='Martinez'] and Andres Valdez (7-9 FG) each scored 16 points to lead Mesa Vista past Legacy Academy in the first Class 2A quarterfinal of the day. [player_tooltip player_id='1533973' first='Jordan' last='Gallegos'] scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for Mesa Vista.

Key Stat: Mesa Vista held Legacy Academy to 22.6 shooting (12-53) and forced the Silverbacks into 18 turnovers. Legacy didn't have a single player in double figures.

How It Happened: Mesa Vista came out strong and grabbed a19-9 lead after the 1st quarter. The Trojans steadily built their lead to 31-14 at halftime and 42-19 after 3 quarters as Legacy Academy struggled to make baskets. Mesa Vista led by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter.
