Holiday Tournament Recap: SEMO Stock Risers
The holiday tournament season produced several excellent performances in the Southeast part of the state. Here is a look at some of those holiday stock risers from Southeast Missouri.
Dominique Hardimon 6’3″ Poplar Bluff: The powerful 2019 combo forward led the Mules to the championship of the Poplar Bluff Showdown for the first time in 31 years. Hardimon scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Bluff’s victory over defending champion Jonesboro, AR. Hardimon is a relentless worker who just plays bigger and harder than anyone he is matched up against.
Chauncey Hughes 6’1″ Cape Girardeau Central: The 2019 guard took over the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament as he led the Tigers to the championship. He scored 24 points in the Tigers’ victory over Jackson in the semifinals and followed up with another 24-point performance in Cape’s 65-56 victory over Charleston in the championship game.
Klay Barton 6’1″ Doniphan: The 2018 guard has been on a scoring tear throughout the season and that continued during the Bloomfield Tournament, where he averaged 26.7 points in four games to lead the field in scoring. Barton is an excellent 3-point shooter who can also make plays for others on offense. He also scored a career high 51 points in a game earlier this month.
Trey Jenkins 6’7″ Sikeston: The 2019 forward came through for the Bulldogs on both ends of the floor as they won the St. Dominic Tournament without star player Fred Thatch. Jenkins had 24 points in the Bulldogs’ first round victory over Lutheran St. Charles. In the championship game, Jenkins had 12 rebounds and nine blocks in Sikeston’s victory over Fort Zumwalt West.
Michael Brewer 6’5″ Hillsboro: Playing alongside All-State forward Gaven Pinkley, the 2019 forward stepped into the spotlight with some prime-time performances for the Hawks, who won the Bob Sechrest Tournament title at Park Hills Central. Brewer had 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Hawks semifinals victory over Park Hills Central and followed up with a game-high 26 points in the championship game victory over Farmington. Brewer is a strong low-post performer who can score and rebound with excellent productivity.
Darius Jones 6’0″ Hayti: The athletic 2018 combo guard led Hayti to a championship-game berth in the Bloomfield Tournament. Jones averaged 23 points in the four games to lead his team to a 3-1 record and runner-up finish. Jones has an excellent blend of quickness, athleticism and scoring ability which makes him difficult to stop.
Hayden Sprenkel 6’2″ North County: The 2018 guard continued his torrid scoring pace as he averaged a tournament high 29 points in leading the Raiders to a third-place finish at the Bob Sechrest Tournament in Park Hills Central. Sprenkel is a prime-time perimeter shooter with long distance range.
