6th Man Hoops Clash of the Counties: Guard Standouts

On January 25th and January 26th, 6th Man Hoops hosted a showcase at Newark Collegiate Academy in Newark, NJ that consisted of an array of matchups of programs across the different counties all over New Jersey. Let's take a look at some guys, at the guard position, that stood out over the course of Saturday and Sunday's action.    Finishing the game against BelovED Charter with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, Malachi Thomas showed his ability to get in the paint off dribble drives and finish at the rim. Thomas was also able to knock down a couple catch and shoot threes as well as get to the free throw line a couple of times.     [player_tooltip player_id='2763472' first='Juan' last='Sanchez'] showcased his ability to knocked down open mid-range shots, primarily coming off screens and pin downs. Sanchez also showcased his ability to be a pesky defender; pressuring the ball effectively and doing a good job of containing drives. Sanchez finished the game against North Star Academy with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.     Tajee Carter displayed his ability to generate rim pressure, consistently getting in the paint. Carter's paint touches often times resulted in him finishing around the rim or playing through contact and getting multiple trips to the free throw line. Shooting 7/10 from the free throw line, Carter finished the game against Trenton with 14 points.     Handling a lot of the PG responsibilities, the fundamentally sound [player_tooltip player_id='2748965' first='Landon' last='Pernell'] did a good job of setting the table for Piscataway's offense. Pernell showcased his ability to keep the ball moving and find open guys as well as make open shots off the ball, knocking 3 open catch and shoot threes. Pernell finished the game with 11 points and 4 assists.     Being highly effective off the ball for Piscataway, Josh Lima shined in his ability to knocked down open shots from the perimeter. Hitting 3 threes from behind the three point line, Lima showcased his ability to shoot it efficiently and effectively off the catch. Lima finished the game with 13 points.     Just getting his feet wet as a freshman, [player_tooltip player_id='2788641' first='Gavin' last='Roach'] showed flashes of his scoring abilities; attacking the rim in transition as well as getting to his mid range pull up game and knocking down an open three. Roach finished the game with 18 points.     Maurice Williams showcased his ability to make shots in Dwight Morrow's victory over Newark Westside. Whether it was knocking down threes off the catch or hitting mid range pull ups, Williams displayed what he can do as a shot maker. Williams also did a good job of rebounding the basketball and pushing the ball up the court in transition. Williams finished the game with 15 points and 13 rebounds.     Finishing the game with 16 points for Dwight Morrow, X'Zavion Hunt was effective in transition as he showcased his ability to finish plays in transition. Throughout the course of this game against Newark Westside, Hunt often times got ahead of the defense, in transition, off forced turnovers and finished at the rim.     Moses Uzell got the free throw line often in the matchup against Hillside. Uzell did a good job of attacking the basket and drawing contact at the rim. Uzell also showcased his ability to knock down open catch and shoot threes. Uzell finished the game with 14 points against Hillside.     Handling a lot of the offensive workload for Hillside, Isaiah Green erupted for 30 points against North Star Academy. Green showcased his ability to made shots from three point range off the catch, hit mid range shots off the bounce, and finish at the rim off dribble drives in the half court and pushing the break in transition.     [player_tooltip player_id='2783963' first='Shane' last='Jacobs'] showcased his shooting ability, primarily off the catch, knocking down 4 threes from the perimeter. Jacobs displayed his smooth release, knocking down shots in transition and in halfcourt sets. Jacobs finished the game with 13 points and 7 rebounds.     Handling most of the ball handling responsibilities for Ewing, [player_tooltip player_id='2342600' first='Terrance' last='Traylor'] showed good patience as a pick and roll operator, often making the right reads. Whether it was finding open shooters or diving big men, Traylor showed his poise as a primary ball handler. Traylor did a good job of getting in the paint and playing off two feet; allowing himself to hit dump offs, kick outs, and display his floater as well. Traylor finished the game with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.     Tyrone Washam did a good job of setting the tone for Camden Eastside. As a ball handler for this offense, Washam was able to get guys involved early and often. In terms of creating for himself, Washam showcased his ability to finish strong, through contact, at the rim, get to the free throw line, as well as knock down open shots from three. Washam finished the game with 15 points and 7 rebounds.     Ilijah Adams consistently made winning plays for Newark Tech in their victory over Camden Eastside. Adams pressured the ball the length of the court, ultimately turning defense into offense. Adams finished strong at the rim in transition, finishing the game with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals.     Operating as the primary ball handler for Newark Tech's offense, [player_tooltip player_id='2623169' first='Rodney' last='Tullis Jr.'] consistently pushed the pace in transition; getting his teammates involved and making a lot of the right passes. Tullis Jr. did a good job of getting in the paint to make plays for himself and others, displaying his good instinctual feel for the game. Tullis Jr. finished the game with 18 points and 8 assists.
