Recruiting Report: Derek Ferebee (2018)
Beulah 6-foot-2 senior wing Derek Ferebee was injured in the off-season so he’s worked to get himself back into shape for a year with high expectations.
“I had foot surgery after the season last year due to hurting it in football,” Derek said. “So unfortunately, I wasn’t able to play AAU this summer, and focused on the recovery on my foot and getting back to 100 percent.
“I think my junior year went pretty well individually and as a team. However, we fell short of making it to state which was pretty disappointing for us. But, we did earn valuable experience that will help us a lot this year.”
Beulah went 20-4 a year ago and has much of their talent returning. Expectations are very high.
“For this season we have pretty high expectations since we have a lot coming back,” Derek explained. “We only lost one starter, and missed the state tournament by only a couple points last year. So, like every season, our goal is to win the region and work on improving aspects of our team as the season goes on.”
The Miners lost to Trinity 67-64 in the Region Final after beating Heart River by three points in the semis. It was Trinity’s second time beating Beulah on the year so beating Trinity and everyone else on the schedule is the goal of Derek and his teammates.
“For this year, I’m working to improve the mental side of the game—such as decision making, ways to use my skill set the best I can, and ways to be a leader for our team,” Ferebee said.
“As a team we expect to improve throughout the season, and look to win the region title and possibly having success after that.
“Individually, I look to become a leader of our team and make sure we keep level-headed. Hopefully, I can use my skill set to earn achievements for my play as well.”
Schools have called Derek for football and likely would be for hoops if Derek hadn’t dealt with surgery.
“Colleges in the area like U of Mary, Minot State and Dickinson have contacted me for football, but have decided not to visit them for football.
“For basketball, I’ve gotten some attention but not anything serious. I think not being able to play this summer slightly limited me from not getting as much attention as I’d hoped. But maybe that can change as this season goes on.”
Derek is an all-state level football player and a big number producing hooper.
