2024 @PrepHoopsTN Combine Evaluations: Part VI

A June Sunday always ushers in the @PrepHoopsTN Combine. Ordinarily the final Sunday suffices, but this year we tipped June 16th with an insanely talented coaching staff. The gym hosted high energy. Read about several of the campers with their evaluations from the day. All measurements/times are listed in the linked article.

How did he measure against the competition?

Good balance. Defends without fouling. Wide defensive base. Can get a little handsy on defense. Ideal wing size. Wonderful 6'9" wingspan. Just buckets. When he gets to top speed DR is fast, but he can be a little ungainly with the first couple of steps when sprinting. His 3.50 time in the sprint was among the best though. Derrick can get in a bad spot positionally on defense. He gets away with it because he is taller than most opponents, but facing guys his height he will need to get better on the ball.

DJ showed off great wheels in the Lane Agility portion (11.40, 11.84 seconds). Elite speed. His sprint times (3.37, 3.47) were in the Top 10%. Wilbur impressed coaches with his speed and guile with the basketball. Though he was a shorter guard, Wilbur consistently jetted into the lane and created problems. He needs to fill out with some work in the weight room in order to be more difficult to stop in deep. Wilbur will be fine at the high school level, but college guards are bigger and much more physical with bumps, nudges. Wilbur already makes smart passes, but finding the unexpected pass can also erode the defensive pressure. He seems like the kind of guy that would thrive playing alongside shooters in a halfcourt set. Wilbur's easiest aspect in need of improvement is communication. It is tough for most high school boys to "boss" around teammates, but a true point guard leader must deliver messages, guide the team. He can do that.

Connor was ok in the Lane Agility. Increasing his speed long-term will help make him more of a weapon with the basketball. Connor's sprint times were ok, but his Lane Agility needed work. One measures speed and the second agility/quickness. Branch can devote himself to plyometrics and any track training to develop.

Slightly bigger hand than average. High-academic student. He needs to get lower when defending on the ball. Antwaan was one of the taller guards, so often he was checking a guy shorter than him. In order to capably handle that kind of challenge, Underwood needed to get low. He has the athleticism to do it. It just takes commitment. Another small detail that he can address is rebounding intensity. When the shot went up he did too much looking at the ball. Underwood needs to hunt rebounds. Honestly, he will be a second or third option offensively for Loudon. Making an impact as a rebounder is a great way to stay on the floor. Same with defense.

Combo guard in style. Jaylen is competent taking the corner three-pointer or initiating the entire offense. Last year Jaylen thrived with Red Bank alongside two stellar seniors: Kendrick Lloyd, Anthony Bonner. Expect him to continue that trend as a senior. Big hands (8.0" x 10.0"). Sunday Jaylen played 5 vs. 5 alongside Jayden Capshaw Jayden Capshaw 6'0" | PG Loudon | 2025 State TN . The pair both finished Top 5 for the day. They moved well without the basketball and played off of each other like long lost buddies. Rice is a little short for a college "2", but NAIA will play shorter guards if they can score. Jaylen can. There is a college basketball future at the small school level for Rice.

Embraces contact in the lane. Unafraid of contact. Criticisms? There were no glaring weaknesses in his game. Maybe Capshaw can improve his left-hand finishes. Jayden was in the conversation for MVP though he ultimately ranked third best on the day. Fast sprint times (3.44, 3.48). Capshaw is an elite baseball player. As a basketball player he thrived as either a point guard or a combo. Very quick feet. Elite balance. JC hit his shots. Frankly, his outside shooting set him apart from the pack.
