Expert Analysis
Joshua Burish | Prep Hoops Scout
Welch, committed to St. John’s University–Minnesota, had a solid all-around game despite the outcome. He started off showing energy on the boards and continued that effort throughout the game. Known as a spot-up three-point marksman, he showcased that skill by connecting on five triples with a pure shot. Yet he wasn’t hesitant to put the ball on the floor and attack defenders who were wary of his long-range threat. He finished with a team-high 20 points.

Welch is a PHI small college favorite in the 2026 class. He is a flat out baller! High level shooter that connected on four of them spotting up in their win. Quick release and consistent mechanics every single time. More than just a shooter he is crafty around the hoop posting up and is sneaky with the ball in his hands taking it to the cup. Plus passer that makes the right decisions and has improved as a defender. Went for 19 points.

Welch continues to play well each time we see him no matter the setting. He is a rock solid wing at 6’4” that can snipe from deep, but it was his overall offensive skill package that impressed. Welch got on the offensive glass for multiple put backs, won on crafty straight line takes finishing in traffic, and made quite a few nice passes as a connective distributor. Defensively he displayed toughness blocking a jump shot along with getting a few steals. Big time small college gem!

Made sound defensive stances for size. Moves feet effectively forcing rushed turnovers on the ball handler. Remained consistent on the glass reading the ball coming off the rim well. Had an o board put back finish and fought for another o board off a free throw to out hustle the inside man on the block to convert again. Will affect the game with length and smart IQ.

Pick and pop actions were the bread and butter for Welch as he used his strong frame and height to draw taller defenders away from the rim where he could fire away from 3-point range. Also skilled enough to operate as a distributor, Welch hit a cutter with a nice pass and passed out of double teams with his back to the basket. A type of player who just helps you win basketball games, skilled forwards who are strong and can shoot will always find a role.
