Freshman Showcase – Tony’s Standout Guards
Prep Hoops Indiana – Freshman Showcase
Standout Guards
Khristian Lander – 6’0” | Evansville Reitz
Khristian Lander was the top performing guard throughout the showcase. He consistently impacted the game on both ends of the floor. Lander rebounds at an elite level for a point guard and loves to get out in transition. The lefty has a smooth stroke from deep and knocked down the long ball all day (https://twitter.com/PrepHoopsTony/status/909127357562327040). He is creative getting into the lane off the bounce and has the vision to find his open teammates at the right time. Khristian uses his length and quickness to shut down opposing guards and caused a multitude of turnovers. He was also one of the best at the chase-down block at the showcase.
Malik Stanley – 5’10” | Warren Central
Malik Stanley quietly put together a solid showing yesterday afternoon. He was one of the more shifty guards with the ball in his hands. Stanley kept his defenders off balance with ball fakes and dribble moves to help create space and open up driving lanes. Malik made a few moves that were followed by step-back jumpers but also had the strength to go and finish inside around the rim. He will be a guard that surprises a lot of people in the coming years at Warren Central (https://twitter.com/PrepHoopsTony/status/909136074768879619).
Sean Black – 5’7” | Warren Central
Sean Black had his fingerprints all over the showcase. He picked up opposing ball handlers in the backcourt from the tip until he was subbed out. His energy level was unmatched and he was the first to hit the floor for a loose ball. He keeps his center of gravity low and attacks hips on the offense end. Black’s first step was quick and he used his strong frame to get by his defender. Sean also showed off his smooth jumper on occasion (https://twitter.com/PrepHoopsTony/status/909097590683258880). Definitely another Warren Central guard that’s going to surprise people in this class.
Gus Etchison – 5’11” | Hamilton Heights
Gus Etchison was another one of those guys that brought energy and quickness to the guard position. He was able to get by defender’s hips with regularity and had a creative finishing repertoire when he did. Gus used his quickness and athleticism to get to his spots on the floor and create opportunities for his teammates. He had a floater that he consistently went to from ten to fifteen feet out with a lot of success. Etchison is a guy to keep an eye on especially when he adds strength to his frame.
Weston Hamby – 5’9” | Manchester
Weston Hamby may have been the best true point guard throughout the day. Hamby is a high IQ prospect that understands the game and has great court vision. He was also one of the best on ball defenders that attended the showcase. Weston is a reliable threat from deep but finds more success getting into the back line of the defense and creating rotations (https://twitter.com/PrepHoopsTony/status/909125175744040960). He is a great finisher with both hands around the rim and is an excellent interior passer amongst the bigs. Hamby’s skill set sets him apart now and will be something that he continues to build on in the future.
Naylon Thompson – 6’0” | Fort Wayne Bishop Luers
Naylon Thompson can control a game from the point position. He is quick with his decision making and can get into the defense with regularity. Naylon is a creative finisher around the rim and has shown improvement in his ability to finish through contact. He is deceptive with his quickness and uses that to his advantage both on offense and defense. He created turnovers and deflections that lead to easy baskets in transition. Bishop Luers has a true leader on their hands in the Class of 2021.
