7A Breakdown

For starters, the Cherry Tigers have the best all around basketball player in the state of Minnesota in [player_tooltip player_id='1288733' first='Isaac' last='Asuma']. There might be guys that have explosiveness that make them better at one area, guys with size and huge potential that allow them to make the biggest impact, but when it comes to a player doing everything for his team, nobody can match Asuma. And now Isaac has teammates around him that all have two years of varsity experience which is huge. Other top Class A contenders lose pieces, Cherry gets everything back a year older. Deer River will still be tough, Chisholm will be good and I think Littlefork-Big Falls will be tough. And then there is Carlton-Wrenshall who I just learned right now is combined.

Why did it take so long for me to learn that? There is no transaction wire that announces schools combining programs. The state high school league does not announce this. There is no twitter announcement that came to my feed. I'm sure there is a small newspaper that had it and there is a school website that said it, but obviously we can't regularly scan all small town papers and school websites. When I did my part for the Breakdown book in 7A I turned it in with those teams being separate but Tim learned of the change and took care of it on their team profile.

So now I am hear to tell you that a school that was 10-14 last year, and another school that was 8-18 last year, they have combined. And in that combination they have a conference MVP, two first team all league honored players, and a second team all honored player. And those four players combined to average 76 points a game last year. I don't know how that will mix but the last two times we saw teams combine like this - Rock Ridge and Border West - they were really good. So we have to expect that Carlton-Wrenshall will be some kind of good.
