Recruiting Report: Cam Saville (2018)
For many players, playing AAU basketball means adjusting and adapting to a new role on a team. Cam Saville did that and it helped him round out his game.
Saville, a 6-foot-5 guard from Fargo Shanley, spent the grassroots season playing with ECI Prospects where he worked on developing his game playing on the wing.
“We had a very successful year and it helped me get a lot more versatile,” said Saville. “I play point guard for Shanley but for AAU I played a lot more on the wing. It was good to me to become more versatile and play more positions.”
Saville certainly has the size and frame requisite a wing player and showed he’s got the ability to play on and off the ball. It’s helped him become more versatile and understand different roles on the floor.
“Playing on the wing helped me learn how to score from different spots on the floor,” said Saville. “As a point guard you might have to work a little more with the ball to create scoring chances where playing on the wing, you learn to play off the ball a little more. Now that I’ve played on the wing, I think it’ll help me understanding what they are thinking and the value of different things like moving off the ball.”
Saville still is a playmaker at heart and excels at getting his teammates involved in the offense. He uses his length effectively to break down defenses and wants to find shooters or cutters in the process. He’s a solid scorer from the mid-range and in and said he’s working on improving and speeding up his jumpshot.
Saville’s drawn interest from schools throughout North and South Dakota.
“I’ve heard from all the local schools and two of the South Dakota schools,” said Saville. “Sioux Falls and Augustana. Jamestown, Valley City, Concordia Moorhead. I visited most of them this summer, tried to get a feel for each college. I’m not in too big of a hurry. I’d like to see how this basketball season goes and go from there.”
