Recruiting Report: Garrett Bickett (2018)
A big part of playing point guard is being able to effectively control the tempo of a game. That was a point of emphasis for Garrett Bickett this past summer and he feels like it’s taken his game to another level.
Bickett, a point guard from Carrington, spent the grassroots season playing with North Dakota Phenom, one of the top teams in North Dakota, where he had a chance to play against some of the top collections of talent all over the midwest.
“I got a lot better and I thought we really developed as a team,” Bickett said. “I worked on playing at a faster pace and setting a quicker tempo.”
Bickett said playing AAU is a great opportunity to get better because the game speeds up in a big way. The step up in any level of competition comes with things happening faster. Playing at a fast pace on the AAU circuit hopefully will have better prepared him for that.
“The pace in Class B North Dakota is kind of slow a lot of the times and I’m one of the quickest guys out there a lot of the time,” said Bickett. “Going from that to AAU is a change for sure because you are always going against good competition. Guys that are really quick and athletic. I want to play faster and be ready to play college hoops.”
Bickett is hoping to play college basketball and has received interest from several local colleges.
“I’ve been offered by Jamestown, that’s one that sounds very appealing to me,” said Bickett. “I’ll visit in the fall and I’ll visit Valley City too.”
Bickett suffered a broken hand at the end of the AAU season, so he’ll miss about half of the upcoming football season where he plays wide receiver and safety. He won’t miss any time for what should be a fun basketball season.
“We should be really good,” Bickett said. “We made it to the region championship last year. We only lost one senior and the team we lost to, we beat in the regular season and they lost a lot of their top guys. So I’m very excited for the winter.”
