Recruiting Report: Walter Ellis (2018)
Walter Ellis – 6’4” | SG | South Bend Adams | Class of 2018
Ellis is a long, athletic, and improving wing prospect in the Class of 2018. He played this spring session on the Under Armour Association Circuit with G3 Grind 2018. He is coming off a strong junior season at South Bend Adams and has started turning the heads of a multitude of schools.
Walter Ellis is slated for a Toledo visit today and will be visiting more schools throughout the month. He currently holds offers from Valparaiso University, IUPUI, Ball State University, Indiana State University, the University of California Berkley and the University of Toledo.
Along that list, he is getting interest from a great list of schools and has seen some of that interest heat up over the spring. Rice University and UNC Greensboro are the two that have been showing the most interest as of late. Other notable schools that have been in contact with Ellis include, but are not limited to: Vanderbilt University, Indiana University, Michigan State University, University of Dayton, and Wright State University. The list continues.
As Ellis saw his recruitment take off during the spring session on the UAA, he knows that he can play at another level. “From a wins and losses standpoint it didn’t go like we wanted. I showed some good things but personally, I know there’s another level that I can play at.”
He is not satisfied with how he played in the spring session but he’s not letting that hold him back. “We have all of the film and we’ve already been analyzing and working on some stuff.”
Walter has always proven that he can get past the initial defender with ease but has noticed that he struggled a bit when facing the secondary defender.
“The initial blow by is something I’ve shown I can do pretty consistently. Now it’s adding different finishes to it. It’s not something very complicated but it’s more of a matter of getting reps so it becomes comfortable.”
The Under Armour Association offers a great opportunity for him to work on these skills at a high level. “Playing with G3 Grind was definitely beneficial from a development standpoint solely because the Under Armour Association has some of the best talent in the country so you’re forced to adapt which makes you a better basketball player.”
Although we are midway through the month of June, Ellis hasn’t played alongside his high school team yet. “Events with the Indiana Junior All-Stars haven’t yet allowed me to play with Adams.” Even though he hasn’t been on the court with them yet, Walter got a chance to watch them play and was excited about how they looked and the effort they were putting out.
Ellis enjoyed his time with the Indiana Junior All-Stars over the past few weeks.
“It was fun to get back and play with all of the guys. A lot of us have been playing against each other for a long time so personally I just enjoyed getting to play with all of those guys again.”
He is really gearing up for a strong senior season with South Bend Adams after his junior year. Ellis lead them to a 20-6 record last season and had a few break-out performances. Those are becoming more of the norm and are something that we should expect to see on a nightly basis from the guard prospect.
Walter Ellis is a player that is developing at a rapid pace and his recruiting is starting to catch up. Keep him on the radar as the month of July comes around. He is looking to make some noise with his play heading into his senior year.
