In this article, we are taking a deep dive into the Deuel Cardinals! The Cards have a nice group of players in their program and they are led by Jon Peterreins who is a well-respected coach in South Dakota. He is a teacher of the game and he is passionate about his program! The Cardinals also had 3 players that participated in the B103 All-Star Game. [player_tooltip player_id='1227970' first='Gavin' last='Benck'], Ronnie Begalka, and [player_tooltip player_id='1874086' first='Braydon' last='Simon'] played at Summit High School this past Saturday (March 25th). That was a cool honor and a fun way to end their high school careers. Coach Peterreins: "The 22-23 Deuel Cardinals put in the hard work and helped move the program in the right direction. The varsity finished 13-9 overall and in the Northeast Conference, we had a record of 7-3. The Junior Varsity finished 10-9 and gained some great experience for the next season. The C Team finished 8-2 and also made some great progress."   PHD: What were some of the highlights that stick out?   Coach Peterreins: "Before we hit the court to compete, we want to excel first in the classroom. Our final roster finished with a 3.54 accumulated GPA and that is something to be very proud of this team. Overall we are very pleased with how this team competed throughout the season on the court and held their own against the best teams on our schedule."   PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?   Coach Peterreins: "Our main adversity this season was due to some injuries that occurred with our seniors who played important roles within the program. Senior center Josh Mussi went down early in the season with a torn ACL. Senior guard Dravyn Carlson needed some rest mid-season with an achilles strain and missed 3 games. Senior center Carter Leddy missed the final 5 games due to a dislocated elbow. Senior guard Devon Moore, who is a nationally ranked bronc rider, injured himself in a rodeo competition and missed the final 4 games. We did have good depth this year and helped us continue to compete at a high level."   PHD: Can you talk about your seniors and what will be missed?   Coach Peterreins: "We will miss our 10 seniors who were a multi-talented group who provided leadership and experience throughout the season." He led our team in rebounding and was a co-leading scorer. He had the ability to finish with soft touch in the paint and stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting. Gavin is one of the all-time best deflectors and anticipators in our program history. Gavin was named to the Northeast Conference 2nd Team. Gavin plans to attend Dakota State University to play football and basketball. He plans to pursue a degree in business management and marketing." He finished with 97 assists this season and ranks #5 in program history. He played great on-ball defense putting pressure on his opponents. Braydon plans on attending Dakota Wesleyan University to play basketball and pursue a degree in physical therapy."   Ronnie Begalka (2023) |6-4 C| 6 ppg 5.7 rpg .8 apg .7 bpg   "Ronnie was a great rebounder who never gave up on a play. His motor was one of the best in the program. He was a rim protector and led us in shot blocks this season with 16. Ronnie plans to attend Dakota State University to play football and pursue a business management degree."   Dravyn Carlson (2023) |6-1 G| 5.4 ppg 2.8 rpg .6 apg .6 spg   "Dravyn was a team-leading perimeter shooter for us this year and also provided a rebounding presence. He led the varsity team with 32% 3PT field goals. He plans to attend Lake Area Technical College to pursue a graphic design degree."   Owen Quail (2023) |5-11 F| 3.1 ppg 2.8 rpg .6 apg .7 spg   "Owen was our glue guy and made the team better connected and his ability to defend. Owen is a multi-sport athlete who plans to attend Valley City to play football and pursue a business degree and eventually become a commercial airline pilot."   Carter Leddy (2023) |6-4 C| 4.2 ppg 2.5 rpg .1 apg   "Carter ended his senior year as one of best finishers around the rim in school history, going 32-52 with a 62 FG%. His season ended 5 games early with a dislocated elbow as he made a hustle play, diving for a loose ball. Carter plans on attending Lake Area Technical College to pursue a degree in physical therapy."   Ricky Berndt (2023) |6-0 G| 2.7 ppg 1.8 rpg .7 spg   "Ricky brought quickness to the team both offensively and defensively. He played the game with a high IQ and with great endurance. Ricky will be attending Northern State University next year on a cross-country and track scholarship. He is the school record holder in the 800m and is chasing down the 1600m record this season."   Jaydon Schmalz (2023) |5-11 G|   "Jaydon was a scout team leader this year and gave great effort each day in practice making good progress with his two years of high school basketball. Jaydon plans on attending Dakota State University for cybersecurity."   Devon Moore (2023) |5-10 G|   "Devon was a scout team leader this year and made our guards better each day in practice with his defensive presence. Devon plans on attending Tarleton State University on a Bronc Riding Scholarship. He plans to pursue an Ag Business and Communications degree."   Josh Mussi (2023) |6-3 C|   "Josh brought a presence in the paint defensively and was developing offensively while playing two years of high school basketball. His career ended with an ACL injury during week 3 of the season. Josh plans on attending Lake Area Technical College to pursue a degree in physical therapy."   PHD: Who were some of your hardest workers?   Coach Peterreins: "I felt our program all pursued the team mission of putting in the hard work and being the best we can be. We did a good job of having competitive practices and keeping everyone accountable throughout the season. Our team captains [player_tooltip player_id='1227970' first='Gavin' last='Benck'], [player_tooltip player_id='1874086' first='Braydon' last='Simon'], Ronnie Begalka, and [player_tooltip player_id='1625215' first='Trey' last='Maaland'] did a nice job competing with intensity each day in practice."   PHD: Who are a couple of role players that stood out to you?   Coach Peterreins: "Our role players who made an impact off the bench would be Dravyn Carlson, Carter Leddy, and Ricky Berndt who provided offense and depth to this year's team. Our best perimeter shooter based on percentage was Dravyn Carlson who shot 32% from 3FG. Our best finisher around the rim was Carter Leddy who shot an impressive 62% from 2FG. Ricky Bernt also provided defense and made some big shots throughout the season. They average 12 ppg and 8 rpg together and were a big part of our success."   PHD: Who will be a top player to look out for next season? He can score in a variety of ways and has become a very consistent player who continues to take his game to the next level. He led the varsity this season in steals and was our co-leading scorer. Trey was selected to the Northeast Conference 2nd Team and the Lake Central Conference Team this year. Look forward to Trey having a great senior season and will help lead the up-and-comers."   PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to look out for in the future?   Coach Peterreins: "We have some nice players coming up the ranks, see below for JV Stats and comments." Defensively he can guard at all positions. He led us in scoring this past JV season and earned some varsity time throughout the season. Gabe shot it best in the program from the perimeter at 38%." He is the strongest power forward in the state and had the highest lifting totals in the SD Powerlifting in Class A!"   Jaxon Peterreins (2025) |6-0 G| 3.5 ppg 2.3 rpg 2 apg 2.3 spg   "Jaxon has quick hands and led his JV team in deflections/steals. He has great court vision and is a very accurate passer. He did a great job of running the offense and distributing the basketball this season."   Dexter Unzen (2024) |6-2 F| 3.5 ppg 2.7 rpg 1.6 apg 1.6 spg   "Dexter has proven to shoot the ball from the perimeter and has improved how to score while attacking. He received the Together Award for being a great teammate on and off the court."   Troy Jensen (2026) |5-10 G| 3.3 ppg 2.4 rpg 2.3 apg 1.1 spg   "Troy has a balance of skill set and the ability to be a three-level scorer. Troy has a good feel for the game and good court vision to distribute the basketball."   Caden Finnesand (2025) |6-1 G| 3.3 ppg 3.3 rpg .4 apg 1.3 spg   "Caden brings an offensive presence from the perimeter and is working to become a consistent scorer. He really improved his rebounding this year and continues to improve defensively."
