Prospect Spotlight: Kenard Richardson (2020)
Many freshmen that are physically gifted struggle to find their role early in their high school career. It’s usually the first time that they play against kids that are bigger, stronger and faster for them.
For Varina’s freshman Kenard Richardson, there wasn’t that problem as he came into the season knowing exactly what he needed to do. As a sixth man on one of the best teams in the Richmond area, he didn’t need to bring anything more than what he already does well.
“I’m a slasher,” Richardson said. “I prefer playing on the wing so I can attack, because I’m bigger and stronger than most guards that check me, so I can just body them and go up strong.”
Richardson played big minutes for Varina all season, and was productive on a consistent basis, even scoring in double digits in multiple games. His size allows him to get the cup and finish through contact, but it also makes him a valuable asset defensively. With him coming off the bench fresh, he was able to guard the best player on the other team regardless of the position.
While he’s physically gifted, allowing him to play with older players right now, Richardson knows that he needs to continue to work on his game if he wants to be the best version he can be.
“I’ve been working on my jumper and my handles,” he said. “I know I can dribble, but I dribble a little slow and I want to get it faster, and I definitely need to shoot my jumper more in the games because I’ll be wide open but choose not to shoot it.”
What’s also impressive about Richardson is how he understands his own game, and understands that toughness on both ends is part of his game. When asked what player he strived to be like, he answered “Paul George.”
If he can develop a jump shot and continue to be a versatile and lock down defender, that won’t be a bad comparison to make.
