Updated 2023 Rankings: FREE Overview
In this article:
We have done another update of the senior class rankings in Virginia, and as we always do we will provide you with some top notch content regarding it. We start with a quick look at an overview, seeing some of the top things we’ve noticed when doing this update.
Top Players Leave the State
The top part of the rankings look much different from our last update in June, as a mass exodus of top players occurred heading to different national and regional powerhouses
Duke commit Caleb Foster Caleb Foster 6'4" | CG Oak Hill Academy | 2023 #18 Nation VA , who had been the top prospect since the very first class rankings, left powerhouse Oak Hill after legendary Head Coach Steve Smith retired and will suit up at Notre Dame High School in California.
Jamie Kaiser, who was April and May’s biggest stock riser in the spring, was at #4 in our last rankings before transferring to national powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida from Bishop Ireton.
Troy McKoy Troy McKoy 6'4" | SG Cushing Academy (MA) | 2024 #200 Nation New E who was at #8 in our last rankings chose to reclassify at Massanutten to the 2024 class so he will make his debut in those rankings.
Davin Cosby, who was the biggest stock riser on the east coast during July, would have had a chance to move to the top of the rankings after being at #10 in the last rankings, but he chose to transfer to Word of God in NC from Benedictine.
Rankings Pretty Set at this Point
You won’t see a ton of change in the class rankings as far as movement of prospects, as we have had years of watching the senior class to determine their positions and feel very comfortable about it. While there have been some moves and shakes with some players going up and new players coming in, a lot of the order is the same as the summer just solidified what we believed in June. Stay tuned for more content on the biggest risers and new faces in the updated rankings.
Most of Top 5 Still Available
There are still plenty of division one recruits who are still available in this class, even at the top. While #1 DeShawn Harris-Smith DeShawn Harris-Smith 6'5" | SF Paul VI | 2023 State #53 Nation VA recently committed to Maryland, the next four in the rankings are still available.
#2 Dennis Parker Dennis Parker 6'6" | SF John Marshall | 2023 State #89 Nation VA Jr. of John Marshall is still somewhat of an enigma on the recruiting trail, as there aren’t many who have an idea of where he’s leaning and his recruitment still seems to be wide open. He recently took official visits to Georgetown and Oklahoma State and there are bound to be more coming this fall.
#3 Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA of STAB is still available, although he recently announced his decision will come down to Stanford and Vanderbilt as the high academic 6’9” big man took visits to both schools this fall.
#4 Austin Ball Austin Ball 6'7" | SF Miller School | 2023 State #203 Nation VA of Miller School recently took an official visit to George Mason, and it must have gone very well as a few recruiting experts have given their Crystal Ball predictions to GMU.
#5 Adrian Myers Adrian Myers 6'5" | SF Massanutten | 2023 State VA was a huge stock riser in July with DC Premier, and he originally made a commitment to Rhode Island before changing his mind and deciding to take some more visits. He could be a guy who gets more late if he doesn’t choose to commit soon.
Criminally Under Recruited
This class is one of the most wide open for recruitment, and a lot of it has to do with the way the recruiting game has changed with the transfer portal. With that being said, some of the prospects are just down right getting hosed and it’s criminal how much they don’t have right now. Here’s a look at 3 prospects that need more attention.
#9 AJ Wills AJ Wills 6'1" | PG S3 Academy | 2023 State VA | 6’2” PG | LC Bird
Wills is a player that I guess many don’t know about as he missed the first live period this summer because he’s a successful actor that was shooting his role in the LeBron James biopic “Shooting Stars,” but if you haven’t seen him it’s a shame and coaches should be all over him. He’s lightning quick with the ball in his hands, he’s explosive at the rim and he can both score it and make others on his team better as well.
#11 Yuri Manns Yuri Manns 6'3" | CG LC Bird | 2023 State VA | 6’3” SG | LC Bird
Manns is Wills’ backcourt mate and the First Team All-State selection last season is a guy who may not have a very conventional game but the way he scores it makes it very odd to me that he doesn’t have more options for college. He averaged close to 25 points per game as a junior, he’s a true three level scorer with confidence and the ability to take over games and he’s improved immensely over the past few years.
#17 Jayden Harris Jayden Harris 6'8" | SG Potomac Va | 2023 State VA | 6’4” SG | Potomac
Harris was a little overshadowed on a very talented Team Durant team this past summer on their way to the EYBL semifinals, but if you really watched he was one of their most effective scorers off the bench. He has good size and length on the wing, he’s a good athlete who can get downhill and get out in transition where he can finish above the rim and he can hit a variety of tough shots on the perimeter too.
