On Saturday June 25th I attended the annual Summer64 presented by Gary Lee. There were four sites of 16 teams for 3 days at Sunrise Mountain, Washington, Mesquite and Dobson.
I attended the last day at Mesquite HS with some intriguing match-ups.
Here were some of the senior standouts I viewed:
Kota Benson Kota Benson 6'0" | PG Mesa | 2023 State AZ Mesa (Pictured)
An old school pure PG made some phenomenal full court pass. He drives and kicks it straight into a teammates shooting pocket. He gets downhill well with his dominant left hand using his burst of speed and tight handle. He can shoot it from the three or pull-up from mid.
Kolin J. Vance Kolin J. Vance 6'5" | SF Paradise Valley | 2023 State AZ Paradise Valley
A long lefty athlete flies on the break. He likes getting downhill and touching the paint. His versatility on defense is his calling card. He will defend many positions on the court with good lateral quickness and positional length. He blocks shots and rebounds well. If he can get a straight line drive or on the break, he will flush it down easily. His 3pt stroke is improving as he ages. He calmly knocked down FT’s in OT to get the win.
Cohen Aldridge Cohen Aldridge 6'2" | SF Canyon View | 2023 State AZ Canyon View
A versatile small forward has many traits to like. He can hit the catch-3 with consistency, he can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim and score through contact with his strong build. He rebounds well in his area and will block shots using his length. He is a sneaky good passer and is not afraid of using his body in the paint.
Corey Wood Corey Wood 6'7" | SF ALA-Ironwood | 2023 State AZ ALA-Ironwood
A bigger sized wing forward can shoot it from the 3pt line. He works well in the mid-post and can make a play or shoot it with a pretty looking stroke. He rebounds well in his area using his size and athleticism despite being leaner. His shooting stroke with his size is one of the best in the class.
Tony Willis Tony Willis 5'11" | PG ALA-Ironwood | 2023 State AZ ALA-Ironwood
A tough and heady lead guard. He will defend his position and just plays the right way. He can drive passed his defenders using his right hand. He can step back on his defender off the dribble and pull-up with a player draped all over him.
Cuthbert Tambatamba Cuthbert Tambatamba 5'11" | PG Desert Edge | 2023 State AZ Desert Edge
A tenacious on-ball defender was a pure PG in this contest. He dimed probably every starter on the team in stride. He can score in the paint with strong drives through contact. His lateral quickness and speed effect each games outcome.
Dylan Spilde Dylan Spilde 6'2" | CG Boulder Creek | 2023 State AZ Boulder Creek
A high IQ guard makes every read and plays the right way. He cuts, moved without the ball, pushes the ball down the court when needed and can shoot it. His 3pt stroke off the catch is very clean. He gives a hard ball fake and will get to the rim and score through contact. He will be invaluable for the Jaguars this year.
DeJuan Allen Jr DeJuan Allen Jr 6'6" | PF Tolleson | 2023 State AZ Tolleson
The big man runs the floor and has some bounce. He moves well in space to defend and will alter or block shots. He rebounds in his area and will score on put backs. I just got word that Allen transferred to Desert Edge.
Jacob Brechtel SG 6’0 2023 Paradise Valley
A scoring guard who has found his niche for the Trojans. He can really shoot it. He is their top catch and shoot gunner on the team. He can also take a bump and score through contact. He should have a mini breakout year for new Coach Schumaker.
