Following are five standouts from days 1 and 2. More to come later this week.
Jaxon Childers Jaxon Childers 6'2" | SG Benzie Central | 2024 State MI 6-3 2024 Benzie Central With his older brother Nate moving onto Albion. Childers is moving into a new role for the Huskies in the upcoming year. Still seemed to be ironing out the kinks in that regard on Tuesday morning. While the playmaking and distribution are coming along. He still a next level scorer. Has both excellent lateral and straight line quickness. Quick first step allows him to penetrate at will. Finishes it off with the ability to elevate over most defenders. Showed defensive instincts by stepping into the lane more than one steal. Finished off one with a nice dunk out in transition. Very active grassroots player. Makes it feel like he has been around forever. Sometimes you forget he still has two full years to develop more aspects of his game.
Blake DeZeeuw 6-5 2023 McBain Northern Michigan Christian Like Childers will be stepping into a new role for the Comets with the graduation of Trevin Winkle (Calvin) DeZeeuw appeared to be slightly more comfortable moving into a playmaking role. Played very well in a high level contest with Saginaw Nouvel (see below) Took advantage of the size disparity in that game. Went to the post and was able to pass well out of double teams. Also dished well off of drives. Shot the ball well in a decisive Wednesday victory over Ithaca. The left handed wing really showed off the entire arsenal. Like Winkle a bit off the radar heading into his senior season playing at a small parochial school. If he continues to play how he did in Cadillac during his senior season. He could really explode onto recruiting boards.
Luke Hazelton Luke Hazelton 6'7" | PF Glen Lake | 2023 State MI 6-7 2023 Glen Lake While he is a post prospect all the way. Has similar prospect profile to conference foe Childers. A younger sibling of standout (Reece-Ferris St). Active grassroots participant who will be a four year varsity contributor. Has a real solid all around floor game. A dearth of backcourt option could make him the de facto point guard for the Lakers. Could actually pull off the rare point-center categorization. Has good court vision and ball handling ability. Coaches son who seems to understand the finer points of the game. Establishes deep post position well and has a soft left handed touch around the basket.
Lincoln Hicks 6-0 2024 Manton Explosive point guard with good size. Competed hard against a very good Saginaw Nouvel backcourt (see below) Is a fearless driver who uses his body well to absorb contact. Has a large unorthodox in and out dribble that he uses to create space on the perimeter. Not a textbook shooter as his point. But gets it off easily due to his elevation. Will be taking on a enhanced role with a transitioning program. A little off the radar as he plays with a UP based AAU program. Could really announce himself statistically in his junior season.
MJ Yeager MJ Yeager 5'10" | PG Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central | 2024 State MI 5-10 2024 Saginaw Nouvel If there was a camp MVP. This might be it. If you pay attention to AAU basketball you know the shooting has always been there. However it was the other parts of his game that caught my attention in Cadillac. Showed a tight handle that allowed him to be an effective penetrator. Contact did not bother despite a slight build. Good passer off the dribble with both hands. Seemed very comfortable playing in pick and roll opportunities. Was in constant motion off the ball. Seemingly always caught it in the shooting position. Had the accompanying trigger quick release. And man can he shoot it. Twins can be tough to scout. So take everything I just wrote and copy and paste it for his backcourt partner Donny Yeager Donny Yeager 6'0" | PG Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central | 2024 State MI . This duo is not scared of anything and can seriously shoot the basketball. A chance to be a special familial backcourt in the next two years.
