This is an opportunity for C-Teams, JV and Varsity teams to get ready for the upcoming regular season this fall. This past Monday June 6th, I stopped by Valley High School and saw some good performances from all three of their basketball programs.
Soon to be sophomore Christopher Melendez had a good performance vs Bosque High School and was one of the teams two leading scorers throughout the game. He drove inside numerous times for layups and had many scoring opportunities on the fast break. Christopher hit a three-point buzzer beater to close out the first half. After a solid freshman year, he will carry that success into the summer league and his sophomore year next year.
Ethan Oschwald was a player that caught my eyes right away during Valley’s game vs Bosque High School. He was the captain of the ship playing the point guard position and was the teams vocal leader throughout the game. Ethan scored the ball at a high level and did a good job setting up plays for his teammates as well. He will be a player to keep your eyes on for the rest of this summer league.
Kevin Devargas was the top player during the C-Team/JV game. He set the tone with his aggressiveness scoring the ball and looking for his shot. I lost count how many points Kevin ended up with but could easily tell he led the game in scoring. He is an athletic wing player that will continue making an impact during this summer league.
Tyler Kozlowski was the best performer during his game vs Bosque High School last night. In a back and forth contest for most of the game, Tyler set the tone for Valley High School. He scored the teams first eleven points of the game with a trio of three-pointers. He finished the game with twenty points and six made three-point shots. He had in my opinion a breakout type of season for Valley during his sophomore year and will be one of the teams core players next season and his senior year. Tyler is in the discussion as one of the best shooters in New Mexico.
Luciano Mondragon was locked in prior to the start of the game vs Bosque. The soon to be sophomore is on the verge of having a breakout year with his willingness to play both sides of the ball. During the game last night vs Bosque, Luciano picked up his match-ups defensively full-court and didn’t allow any space to the offensive players. He ran the team well and was aggressive looking for his own shot at the rim. He had several plays throughout the night where he caught the defense sleeping and attacked the basket for easy layups. Luciano is a player I will keep mentioning in the near future.
Diego Miscles is a recent transfer from Atrisco Heritage High School that fits in well for Valley High School. During the game vs Bosque last night, he found various ways to impact the game. He scored at the basket, grabbed offensive rebounds and scored in the open floor in transition. He played solid defense and has great length as a wing defender. Diego will only get more comfortable playing for a good Valley Basketball program.
