Expert Analysis
Tony Roe | Prep Hoops Scout
Hughes may get lost a bit playing down in southeast Iowa, but few players in the state are as important to their teams as this skilled 6-1 guard. He led the Warriors in scoring (15.6), assists (3.5), and steals (3.3) last season while finishing second in rebounding (5.0). He’s a skilled playmaker who can beat his defender off the dribble, and he’s also a fantastic shooter both off the dribble and the catch, knocking down over 42% of his 3s as a junior.

Hughes was an absolute flamethrower in Prep’s win over All-Wisconsin, knocking down four first half 3-pointers en route to a team-high 20 points. He’s a high-level shooter off the catch who moves really well without the ball in his hands. He has a quick release and has his feet squared on the catch at all times, ready to get his shot up. After the defense started to close out harder on him, he looked to attack more, getting into the paint and either scoring or finding an open teammate. He’s a solid defender who will also rebound well on both ends of the floor.
