Continue ReadingTualatin captured its first-ever boys basketball state title in state history with a 66-49 win over previously undefeated Summit, and throughout its run this season, the Timberwolves relied heavily on their senior leadership. Many of these same seniors played on Tualatin’s state runner-up football team, and the result of that game helped spur them onto greatness when it came to hoops.
“After we lost the state championship (in football), we went into basketball with the mindset that we’ve got to get it back – we’ve got to go to the state championship,” said Tualatin senior Noah Ogoli Noah Ogoli 6'2" | CG Tualatin | 2022 State OR . “That just drove us everyday in practice and having the number one ranking, we got everyone’s best effort every game. We’ll remember this forever for sure and we’ll be remembered at Tualatin High School – that was our goal.”
Here’s a look at the top performers for both Tualatin and Summit from the championship game on Saturday night.
Noah Ogoli Noah Ogoli 6'2" | CG Tualatin | 2022 State OR (2022 Tualatin)
Ogoli closed out his high school career in style with a top-notch performance in the final with a game-high 24 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 3 assists. The 6-foot senior was confident with his jump shot while also tough getting to the hoop, especially in transition. Defensively, he took his turns against Summit speedy guard Julian Mora Julian Mora 6'0" | PG Summit | 2022 State OR and came up with four steals. Ogoli was named Tualatin player of the game and earned Second Team All-Tournament honors. He remains one of the top unsigned seniors in the state.
Josiah Lake Josiah Lake 6'1" | PG Tualatin | 2023 State OR (2022 Tualatin)
Lake had a breakout state tournament where he wowed everyone with not only his offensive abilities but especially his athleticism – he could very well be the best inch-for-inch rebounder in the state. He consistently skied above the rim to grab boards on both ends and he wound up with 15 rebounds on the night. While his long range shot wasn’t necessarily clicking, he instead took the ball to the hole and got some buckets in transition. Lake earned First Team All-Tournament recognition.
Malik Ross Malik Ross 6'0" | CG Tualatin | 2022 State OR (2022 Tualatin)
After a relatively quiet first half, like the semifinals Ross got things going in the second stanza attacking the hoop and when he wasn’t scoring, got fouled and converted at the line. The Three Rivers League Defensive Player of the Year made the most out of his turns guarding Summit point guard Julian Mora Julian Mora 6'0" | PG Summit | 2022 State OR and helped harass him into a 5-for-16 shooting night. Ross was named First Team All-Tournament and remains uncommitted for football or basketball.
Peter Burke Peter Burke 6'4" | SF Tualatin | 2022 State OR (2022 Tualatin)
Tualatin’s guards got things going in the end, but the Timberwolves don’t win without the contributions of Burke. In the third quarter, he stepped up and when left open, confidently hit a couple of big perimeter shots. As usual, the 6-foot-4 swingman used his strength and build to hit the boards and battle defensively, making it difficult for Summit star Caden Harris Caden Harris 6'4" | SG Summit | 2022 State OR to get going.
Julian Mora Julian Mora 6'0" | PG Summit | 2022 State OR (2022 Summit)
It wasn’t a great shooting night for Mora, but he was still the heart and the soul of the Storm, constantly looking to push the ball up the floor and attack. Despite his disadvantage both in terms of height and size against his defenders, he still confidently drove in the lane and made some tough shots, while also getting it out to Summit’s shooters for open jumpers. Mora was named to the All-Tournament First Team.
Caden Harris Caden Harris 6'4" | SG Summit | 2022 State OR (2022 Summit)
Similar to Mora, Harris didn’t have the best shooting performance but scored both inside and out, using his strength and athleticism to create space for himself. The 6-foot-5 swingman was very key on the boards by grabbing 11 rebounds, which helped keep Summit competitive by helping contain Tualatin’s usual onslaught on the offensive glass. He finished with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. He earned Second Team All-Tournament honors.
