Continue Reading2018 Logan Kruse has worked himself into a star role over his early career at Dekalb High School. The 6’3” combo guard started playing varsity straight out of the gate as a freshman, found himself as one of the leading scorers and captain as a sophomore, and is now a huge reason for their success this season. Logan is averaging 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.9 steals a game and Dekalb is on a 5-game win streak with a game against Homestead tonight.
“I control the pace and create shots for myself and others.” Logan has the composure and basketball IQ to make the big plays down the line in close games. He plays under control and can get himself shots when he wants and knows when to find open teammates.
Not only is he a great asset on the offensive side of the floor, Logan is also a top-notch defender for Dekalb. “I guard the other team’s best player every game.” Kruse prides himself in helping his team win on both ends of the floor. His energy and activity on the defensive end stand out on a nightly basis as well as his ability to carry his team to victory on the offensive end.
As the regular season comes to an end, I talked with Logan about the current situation with Dekalb and where they need to clean some things up before sectionals hit.
“We block out and do the little things well. We could improve on taking care of the ball and handling pressure.” Dekalb is currently riding a 5-game win streak heading into the final week of play. They are getting hot at the right time behind their leader.
One thing that has really helped this team click as of late is their chemistry. Logan understands the importance of the team being close on and off the court and takes it upon himself as the leader of this team, to help them bond.
“I love this team and we are so close. I’d do anything for them. It’s a special bond that I’ll never take for granted.”
With North Side looming in the first round of sectionals, Dekalb is looking to ride their winning streak into the sectional matchup. Logan also understand what it takes to beat teams with high caliber talent.
This is not the first time that Logan and Dekalb have seen North Side this year. The second game of the season, they faced off with North Side in a 25-point spread.
“To beat North Side, we need to control the tempo and limit their offensive rebounds.” Patience will be key for Dekalb and having Logan with the ball should keep everyone composed as they look to get good shots on every possession.
Looking beyond the high school season, Logan knows what he needs to improve on in the offseason. “This offseason I’ll be lifting weights and working on my overall quickness and athleticism.”
Kruse’s skill set is well developed and it’s obvious that he puts in the work off the court behind closed doors.
In terms of a college program, Logan wants to be around a group with the winning mentality. “I think my biggest impact for a college team will be my winning attitude and that I will do anything to help my team win games.”
With his ability to score at all three levels, defend high caliber players, and be a leader in tough situations, Logan will be a great piece for a program after high school. Keep an eye on the streaking Dekalb team as Kruse looks to lead them to an early upset win in the postseason and beyond.
