The athleticism and quickness of Jefferson was on full display early in this contest, with the J-Hawks able to break down the defense and get to the rim for easy looks in the first quarter. They held Wahlert to just 3-15 shooting in the opening frame en route to a 16-10 edge after one. The Golden Eagles settled in during the second quarter and were able to tie it up at 29 heading into the locker rooms.
The third quarter was dominated by Wahlert, who used their size advantage to score around the rim routinely. They also did a great job using their length to force Jefferson into some tough shots. The Eagles shot 9-15 in the quarter, held Jefferson to 3-11 shooting, and forced a number of turnovers, winning the quarter 22-10 to take a 12-point lead into the final period.
Jefferson used their quickness to turn up the heat on the defensive end, forcing Wahlert into a slew of turnovers and layups on the other end. They were able to trim the deficit down to 4 points, 61-57 after Ayrondus Hodges Ayrondus Hodges 5'10" | SG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2022 State IA made three free throws with 30.9 seconds to play. Wahlert missed a pair of free throws on the ensuing trip, but Jefferson couldn’t take advantage. Wahlert shot just 9-19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, but Jefferson’s hole was a little too big for the J-Hawks to climb all the way out of.

Ben Freed added 13 points and Carson Cummer with 11 points.

2023 Duke Faley Duke Faley 6'5" | C Wahlert Catholic | 2023 State IA (Wahlert)
The game opened with the 6-6 junior big man establishing strong post position, sealing his defender, and finishing with a strong drop step into a score on the left block. He drifted out to the arc more throughout the rest of the first half, but got back into the paint in the second half, scoring around the rim three more times. He has good hands, footwork, and can finish through contact in the paint. You can see why he’s looking to step out and try to stretch the floor, going 11-12 from the free-throw line, showing that he has good form and touch on his shot and may be able to add some of that range to his game. He’s a mobile big who gets good position, rebounds well, and is a really good free-throw shooter.
2023 Seamus Crahan (Wahlert)
Crahan is a long and athletic 6-4 wing who showed some of his athleticism with a steal and powerful dunk in the first quarter. He doesn’t look to shoot much, putting his head down and attacking the rim, and he uses his length and athleticism to compete on the glass. He showed impressive court vision and the ability to create for others, dishing out 6 assists in the win. With his size, he sees the floor at a high level and does a good job finding cutters for easy looks.
2022 Carson Cummer (Wahlert)
A shifty lead guard with handles and body control around the rim, Cummer is a creative point guard who can get others involved, put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, and make an impact on the defensive end. The 6-0 senior finished with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the win.
2022 Ben Freed (Wahlert)
Freed averages about 15 points a game and it’s easy to see why. He’s a confident 6-0 lefty who can score from all three levels. He has a smooth release on his jumper, is a good finisher around the rim, and can knock down pull-up jumpers and floaters as well. He finished with 13 points on 5-10 shooting.
2022 Ayrondus Hodges Ayrondus Hodges 5'10" | SG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2022 State IA (Jefferson)
A 5-10 lead guard with excellent handles and good body control and touch around the rim, Hodges was able to use his quick first step to get by defenders and get to the paint routinely. The lefty knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter but didn’t make any the rest of the night. His strong suit is using his creativity and quickness to get to the bucket for finishes or pretty dump-off passes to teammates. He sees the floor well and is a creative all-around offensive player who can get others involved at a high level. He had 19 points on 7-16 shooting to go with 3 assists.
2022 Kaden Haller Kaden Haller 6'3" | SG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2022 State IA (Jefferson)
Haller is listed at 6-3 and actually plays bigger than that because of his length. He’s an off-ball wing who does a really good job finding open spaces in the defense, cutting to the rim or spotting up for 3s. He had an efficient night, finishing with 14 points on 6-9 shooting (2-4 3P). His release could be sped up a little bit, but he’s a good shooter with solid form and good rotation on his shot. He also contributes in a major way on the glass, finishing with 8 rebounds in the loss.
2022 Andreas Williams Andreas Williams 6'1" | SG Cedar Rapids Jefferson | 2022 State IA (Jefferson)
Williams is a very athletic 6-1 wing who can score from all three levels and he competes on the glass. He fell in love with the jumper a little bit throughout this one, and we’d like to see him attack the rim more, using his big, physical frame to bully his way to the bucket for tough finishes, but he’s a capable perimeter shooter who gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly. He finished with 12 points on 4-10 shooting to go with 5 rebounds.
