Summer Studs to Watch – 5A Guards

<p>Summer revealed a lot of up-and-coming guards who have yet to make a name on the varsity level. Here are some guys to watch to see if they can impact the high school scene this year (in alphabetical order):</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="1270296" first="Mason" last="English"]</strong>, 6-foot-2 guard, Victory Ministry, 2024, Pittsburg HS (pictured):</p> <p>There’s never a guarantee that a player who stands out on the summer circuit will do the same on the high school scene. There are so many factors in play. But if you watched English play this summer, you couldn’t help but be impressed. The guy absolutely filled it up, and was a unique talent. He’s big, solid, and knows no bounds with his perimeter shot. Will his abilities translate to varsity this year? We’ll see.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="1214588" first="Mason" last="Gomez"]</strong>, 6-foot-3 guard, 94x50 Elite, 2023, Topeka West HS:</p> <p>Getting on the floor for Topeka West is a tough thing to do. Gomez did everything he could this summer to demonstrate that he’s ready. He absolutely shot the lights out this summer. Will his talents match the Chargers’ needs. Tough to say. But Gomez bears watching as he brings a specific skill that could be a difference maker.</p> <p>UPDATE: Gomez is reportedly attending Topeka High. Depending upon his eligibility status, Gomez may find playing time with the 6A Trojans this year.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="1300795" first="Dylan" last="Sanchez"]</strong>, 5-foot-5 guard, KS 94×50 Elite, 2024, Shawnee Heights HS:</p> <p>Shawnee Heights will be in need of players this year, and Sanchez might have a shot at time as a sophomore. He showed a lot of energy and some playmaking ability for his summer club. He hits from the perimeter and is tough to contain when he puts the ball on the floor. He’s not a big guy, but Sanchez has athleticism and quickness to be trouble at both ends of the floor.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="1212976" first="Chase" last="Thompson"]</strong>, 5-foot-10 guard, KS 94×50 Elite, 2024, Topeka West HS:</p> <p>Thompson will look to fill the holes in the Topeka West roster. The Chargers return several stars, but will need to plug in some players, and Thompson could be a well-rounded and athletic guard to help out. He had some standout performances this summer. He shoots it well and is tough defensively. He pushes the ball and dishes effectively too.</p> <p><strong>Amarian Womack</strong>, 5-foot-10 guard, KC Runnin’ Rebels, 2024, KC-Washington HS:</p> <p>Womack was a lot of fun to watch this summer for his gritty, in-your-face defense and breakneck pace with the ball. He loves to push the ball through traffic, and he’s effective at turning rebounds into fast breaks. It will be interesting to see if he can be as disruptive and creative on the high school team as he was this summer.</p>
