The annual Prep Hoops Top 250 took place in Des Moines on Saturday afternoon. Throughout the week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the best players in the gym, in a series of articles breaking down the top scorers, defenders, passers, etc. In this article, we’re taking a look at the top five performers that Tony Roe and Easton Hovelsrud saw at the event.

2023 SG [player_tooltip player_id="1167739" first="Da’Shon" last="Fisher"] (Liberty)

When he’s playing downhill and using his superior athleticism and strength to get to the rim for finishes, few players in the state are able to slow down Fisher at this point. The lefty has a great first step, handles it well, and a knack for splitting double teams and getting to the rim. He crashes the glass on both ends of the floor and has the length and athleticism to be an effective defender. His jumper is still a work in progress, but if he can add a consistent stroke to his game, he’ll be very difficult to stop. He was arguably the most impressive player in the gym on Saturday afternoon.

2022 C [player_tooltip player_id="1055294" first="Cameron" last="Fens"] (Hempstead)

In an event short on big bodies, Fens definitely stood out. He was the biggest player in the gym, and he played like it, dominating the glass on both ends of the floor, finishing at a high clip around the bucket, and protecting the rim. He’s a mobile big who can switch on defense, and he defends the pick-and-roll at a high level. His offensive game is still a work in progress, but he has good footwork and soft hands, and he finishes with authority around the rim. He was absolutely dominant as a rebounder, and didn’t shy away from contact in the paint.

2024 SG [player_tooltip player_id="1171661" first="Redek" last="Born"] (Norwalk)

The younger brother of former Mr. Basketball and current Northern Iowa star [player_tooltip player_id="801831" first="Bowen" last="Born"], Redek is primed to have a massive sophomore season for the Warriors. A 6-2 scoring guard with length, he can fill it up from all three levels, showing a quick release off the catch and the ability to create his own look with creative footwork and good pace. He’s a strong finisher around the bucket, and he utilizes his length effectively on the defensive end of the floor.

2024 SG [player_tooltip player_id="1171678" first="Kyle" last="Lamonte"] (Davenport North)

Another athletic, attacking wing who stood out, Lamonte is a great athlete with good length and a lightning-quick first step. Like Fisher, when he’s playing downhill, he’s tough to slow down. He got to the rim routinely throughout the afternoon, showing his superior ball-handling skills. He has a smooth perimeter stroke and gets the ball into his shooting pocket quickly off the dribble. He battled against bigger players on the block defensively and has the lateral quickness to make life difficult for opposing ball-handlers.

2022 PG [player_tooltip player_id="751418" first="Jayden" last="Mackie"] (Aplington-Parkersburg)

The Upper Iowa commit was fantastic on Saturday on both ends of the floor, showcasing his eye-popping athleticism. He can routinely get to the rim, is a knockdown shooter both off the dribble and the catch, and is a great and willing passer who sees the floor extremely well. He doesn't force anything, plays under control, and is equally content scoring or facilitating. He has a great feel for the game.
