Every year Prep Hoops allows high school basketball players to partake in 5v5 scrimmages in hopes of promoting themselves by letting them attempt to be recognized by college scouts. The Top 250 Expo held at Gold Crown Field House allowed high school kids both with and without exposure to showcase their talents. With over 200 kids attending the event, we were presented with an array of different talents.

Here are 5 performers who jumped onto my radar and will be sure to watch in the upcoming high school season from the Top 250 Expo:

If there is anything Tyler knows how to do better than most it would be how to play defense. Recording 5 steals in a single game, Tyler puts endless pressure on defenders on the perimeter and in the paint. Although he is not the tallest kid on the court he maneuvers effortlessly which puts him in a position to get steals. Tyler’s defensive prowess doesn’t end there, he continues to hassle the opposing team by playing full-court defense which makes the opposing point guards desperately trying to get the ball to someone else. Has a quick release and is confident in shooting the ball from deep even when in a slump.

[player_tooltip player_id="965808" first="Mason" last="Black"] | 6’3" Combo Guard | Falcon High School 2022

Undoubtedly the best shooter attending the Top 250 Expo, Mason is a threat when found anywhere behind the arc. His ability to make heavily contested 3’s from anywhere behind the arc, take over games, first one down the court in transition, and finding open teammates when opposing defenses are focused on him makes him a must-watch player. Mason cemented himself as one of the best shooters in the state during this expo when he helped bring his team back from a 14 point deficit by making four 3’s in a row in two-and-a-half minutes. He is already ranked #20 on our site, however, don’t be surprised to see him near the top 10 by the end of the high school season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1284595" first="Peyton" last="Torres"] | 6’2" PG | Eagle Ridge Academy 2023

To say this player is well-rounded would be an understatement. Peyton did all the little things that most people would overlook. Being agile and lengthy assists him in being able to force turnovers, but more impressively runs well in transition after creating turnovers. He is more than capable of making tough passes, as well as his court vision aids him in placing the ball in his teammate’s hands where only they can catch it. Lastly, the most notable skill he brings to any team is his motor throughout the game and his willingness to crash the boards on both ends of the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="969432" first="Colin" last="Hawkins"] | 6’3" Combo Guard | Colorado Prep 2023

By the looks of it, your first guess would not be the [player_tooltip player_id="969432" first="Colin" last="Hawkins"] plays basketball, but his size translates well to the game. Dribble drives and cutting towards the basket tend to be his strengths, but it’s his actual strength that allows him to bully defenders making it easy for him to get to the rim. His high flying dunks are mesmerizing, low post defense is impeccable, but his passing is the most underrated attribute of his game. Colin is patient with the ball and makes the right plays even though he could bulldoze his way through traffic for an easy two points. He is set to attend Colorado Prep next season and should be on most of the scout’s radars.

[player_tooltip player_id="1167509" first="Nick" last="Randall"] | 6’7" PF | Fossil Ridge 2023

One of the most intriguing prospects at the event due to sometimes it felt like he spent more time being airborne rather than on his feet. Endurance and running the floor in transition is only second to his ability to jump out of the gym. [player_tooltip player_id="1167509" first="Nick" last="Randall"] moves extremely quick for his size and his presence in the paint makes players hesitant to drive in. You can tell by his high energy that he likes to play fast and capitalize on fast breaks before the defense has the opportunity to get set.
