Continue ReadingThe season still has quite a bit of time left but we are on the back-half of the schedule. We thought this was a good time to take a step back and see who has put themselves into the conversation for the Senior and Junior All-Star teams. Obviously, there are quite a few players with a good chunk of their schedules to change their standing but we give you our list of players in contention as well as some background.
Background: The make-up of the junior all-stars is quite a bit different than the seniors. They have a group of core player, north, and south. All three groups have 6 players each with the core group playing at both venues and the north group playing in the scrimmage in the north and the south group playing in the scrimmage in the south. That means 18 players will make the group.
Locks: Aaron Henry (Ben Davis), Antwaan Cushingberry (Lawrence North), Caleb Middlesworth (Oak Hill), Chance Coyle (Bloomington South), Damezi Anderson (SB Riley), DeAvion Washington (TH South), Eric Hunter Jr. (Tindley), Jarron Coleman (Cathedral), Kevin Easley (Lawrence North), Musa Jallow (Bloomington North), Robert Phinisee (McCutcheon), Romeo Langford (New Albany), Gavin Bizeau (Plainfield), Robin Duncan (Evansville Harrison)
This 2018 class is very top heavy so after you get past these guys, you will have a wide open race. However, you have the top core group of 6 to worry about as well. For that group, you would have to think Langford, Phinisee, Easley, Anderson, Jallow, and Hunter will probably have the edge. The lack of size will come in play and that is why Bizeau and/or Middlesworth could make the core team. This group has a lot of guards and wings but not a lot of size outside of those two.
Best of the Rest: Caleb Brown (Broad Ripple), Christian Harvey (Richmond), Hayden Langkabel (Morristown), Hunter White (Tindley), Jack Hansen (Guerin Catholic), Jalan Mull (FW Northrop), Jalen Moore (Cloverdale), Luke Gohman (Floyd Central), Mekhi Lairy (Ev. Bosse), Tyler Watson (Tri-West), Walter Ellis (SB Adams), Michael Roberson (Central Christian), Jalen Moore (Cloverdale), Tony Hopkins (Indy Howe)
After they pick the core group, typically the committee will fudge geography a little bit to get the best guys in. So, it isn’t a clear cut region thing rather than just putting the six guys that are more in the south on the South roster. However, with finishing out the rosters you would have to think that size down low will be a big key for the final four spots.
Scoring guards is pretty much covered but those guys on the “locks” have enough versatility that you could see some other guys make it. You only have two true point guards so you could see another one make it through. Like we said before, the class is really good at the top but most of the talent is in the guard spots so you might not see a ton of guys make it through after them.
Jack Hansen could be an easy fit for this team as he’s had an outstanding season for Guerin Catholic and he will provide size. Tony Hopkins and Caleb Brown could be in line as well and this is more from a sheer size aspect. This group of 2018 prospects doesn’t have a ton of really talented forwards and posts so you could see an easier path for some of those players to make the team.
