Continue ReadingIt can be a little harder to find AAU events during the month of July, but if you do some digging there were still a few tournaments around the state this past weekend. On Saturday I made the trip over to the Legacy Courts in Lafayette for Hoop Hype Nationals. With many programs already calling it quits for the summer it was an opportunity to see players run with different teams than they had in July. Let’s dive in to some player evaluations of the forwards/posts that were in attendance on Saturday. If you missed it yesterday, here are the evaluations from the guards and wings.
Matthew Brown Matthew Brown 6'5" | SF Homeschool | 2022 State IN (Homeschool 2022)
There may not have been a player at Hoop Hype Nationals that put together a more impressive performance than Brown did on Saturday night. The 6’5″ athletic forward broke out for 29 points in the first game of the evening while scoring it in a variety of ways. Brown shot the ball well from beyond the arc and was dominating the game attacking the rim off of the dribble. He got up and finished above the rim with a couple of dunks through traffic as well. As a homeschool product, Brown flies a little under-the-radar, but college coaches definitely need to make a point to see him this winter.
Karson Colin Karson Colin 6'4" | SF Don Bosco Prep | 2023 IN (Lake Central H.S. 2023)
6’4″ physical forward that rebounded the ball very well on both ends of the floor. Colin was a good finisher at the basket and played with a great motor. Definitely looked the part for Indiana Ice Gold and should have a really good junior season up at Lake Central.
Javan Buchanan (Lafayette Jefferson H.S. 2022)
Buchanan had a great month of July that earned a lot of low-major D1 and D2 interest including an offer from Indianapolis. He continued his strong play on Saturday doing a lot of the same things that made him a top prospect since returning to Indiana. A 6’6″ physical forward, Buchanan has shot it pretty well from beyond the arc and is a great finisher at the rim with his athleticism and strength. Very good defensive rebounder.
Aaron Humphrey Aaron Humphrey 6'6" | PF Indianapolis Tindley | 2022 State IN (Indianapolis Tindley H.S. 2022)
After a solid summer playing with George Hill All Indy, Humphrey ran with Indiana Ice Silver over the weekend to get some extra work in. The 6’6″ physical big man is one of the better small school post prospects in the state. He is skilled with his back to the basket scoring it in a variety of ways and is an elite rebounder with the ability to get it outside of his area. Humphrey will put up some huge numbers during his senior season at Tindley.
Justin Chapman (Lehman Catholic H.S. 2023)
The 6’8″ big man from Ohio was very impressive around the basket on Saturday night scoring it with both hands and showing off solid footwork. Chapman is a big body that eats up space on the defensive end, impacts shots, and rebounds the ball in his area very well. Very skilled overall for his size. Chapman stepped out to three-point range and knocked down a couple of threes with a good look shooting stroke. Nice 5-man prospect.
Eddie Reese (Lafayette Jefferson H.S. 2022)
This 6’6″ mobile forward played very well Saturday night. Offensively he drove it from the short corners and wings to finish around the rim with both hands. He has a lot of natural talent inside as a scorer. Reese can get up and rebound at a high level as well. It could be a breakout senior season for the Lafayette Jeff big man.
Micah Wood (West Lafayette H.S. 2022)
Wood was super active on Saturday getting things done around the basket as a scorer and rebounder. The 6’4″ forward is a solid athlete with the ability to score it in a variety of ways. He shot it well both from beyond the arc and in the mid-range. Wood will be on the of the best players at West Lafayette this winter and will take on a major scoring role with Braden Shrewsberry following his dad out to Pennsylvania.
