The Prep Hoops Grit Region Finals, along with the other regional finals held around the country, capped off the month while crowing some champions along the way. Before closing the book on the summer basketball scene we will take a look at the top performers from the weekend in Indiana’s Class of 2023. We’ve already covered the point guards and now we dive into the wings.
Myles Colvin Myles Colvin 6'5" | SG Heritage Christian | 2023 State #51 Nation IN (Heritage Christian H.S. 2023/INB 2023 Elite)
If you were to hand out a Most Valuable Player for the Grit Region Finals, regardless of class, it would most certainly go to Colvin. The future Purdue Boilermaker got better as championship Sunday rolled on scoring 17 points in the quarterfinals before breaking out for 26 and 27 points respectively in the semi-finals and finals. The 6’5″ wing lived up to the hype, shot the ball extremely well all weekend, and led his INB 2023 Elite squad to the 16u title.
Austin Cripe Austin Cripe 6'3" | SG West Noble | 2023 State IN (West Noble H.S. 2023/Tipping Point 2023)
I really like Cripe’s versatility on the offensive end. He is an efficient scorer from all three levels with the necessary size and strength at 6’3″ to score around the basket while also displaying his ball skill and shooting touch from the perimeter. Cripe has strung together a number of good performances in July and has solidified himself as a “bucket-getter” in Indiana’s 2023 class.
Leon Grimes Jr. (Bowman Academy 2023/Indiana Game 2023 Grey)
Grimes Jr. went off for 25 points Friday night while hitting several really tough pull-up jumpers. He is a 6’1″ combo guard with long arms that can really get it going on the offensive end. As he gets stronger his game should really expand on both ends of the floor.
Tyler Kerkhof Tyler Kerkhof 6'1" | PG Greenfield-Central | 2023 State IN (Greenfield-Central H.S. 2023/INB 2023 Elite)
The sharp-shooting Kerkhof was an unsung hero of INB 2023 Elite’s run to the 16u Grit Region Finals championship over the weekend. The 6’0″ combo guard scored 14 points including a couple of threes in their quarterfinal victory and continued to play winning basketball on the way to the title. Kerkhof handles the ball well enough to be a lead guard, but can also really catch-and-shoot making him valuable off the ball as well.
Carson Knox (Brownsburg H.S. 2023/Grand Park Premier 2023 Black)
Knox really stood out Friday night with his ability to shoot the basketball. He consistently made pull-ups off of the dribble and showed that he can catch-and-shoot from beyond the arc as well. The 5’11” combo guard is shifty with the ball in his hands with the ability to create his own shot. Overall shot-maker.
A.J. Lux A.J. Lux 6'3" | SG Crown Point | 2023 State IN (Crown Point H.S. 2023/Indiana Game 2023 Premier)
It was a very strong summer for the Crown Point sharp-shooter. Lux capped it off with a good showing at the Grit Region Finals helping lead Indiana Game to the semi-finals of the 16u tournament before falling to the eventual champions. Lux scored 13 points including a pair of triples in the loss to INB 2023 Elite.
Jackson Price (Mishawaka Marian H.S. 2023/Tipping Point 2023)
Price was really good Sunday morning scoring 17 points with four three-pointers in a very good game against the Grand Rapids Thunder. Not only did he shoot it well from the perimeter, but the 6’2″ then had success attacking closeouts as they tightened up to him after draining shots from beyond the arc. Price keeps getting better and is poised to have a breakout junior season.
