Spending time at Dinos Trigonis events in July is a rite of passage for every Southern California-based evaluator. This weekend proved no different, as Trigonis hosted both a team and individual event during the second live period. I’ll have two reports worth of standouts.

Best player

[player_tooltip player_id="954255" first="Elijah" last="Price"], 6-9 2022 PF, St. Anthony/ Carson Lightning

Event: All West Live

The do-it-all big man set up teammates before scoring himself in the second half of his first showcase game. He showed off every facet of his game: he took bigs off the dribble from the perimeter, he scored with his back to the basket, blocked shots and altered a number of others, and passed the heck out of the ball in transition.

Most upside

Carter Bryant, 6-8 2024 W, Fountain Valley/ Inland Rotary

Event: Pangos 32

It took all of one play to see how advanced Bryant’s game is. He caught the ball on the right side of the 2-3 zone defense, and as the defense shifted, he rocketed a no-look feed to the opposite side for a three-point basket. His court vision and feel are tremendous, and his frame looks like a high-major wing.

Julius Olanrewaju, 6-5 2025 SG, Coalinga/ EBO

Event: All West Live

Olanrewaju, the son of a junior college head coach, has a feel and polished game well beyond his years. In his first showcase game, he hit shot after shot, and his shooting form is picturesque. Not exclusively a shooter, he did a nice job slashing from the wing and finishing around the basket.

Best shooters

[player_tooltip player_id="951223" first="Everett" last="May"], 6-5 2021 G, Los Alamitos/ WCE LA National

Event: All West Live

Notes: Off the catch or in rhythm, May knocks down shots from deep with consistency.

[player_tooltip player_id="748768" first="Brandon" last="Perez"], 6-1 2022 G, Saugus/ Belmont Shore

Event: Pangos 32, All West Live

Perez hit 10 threes a Pangos 32 game, almost exclusively from the right side of the floor. He did the same thing in the All West Live. His mechanics on his dominant hand side are impeccable.

Jesus Figueroa, 6-1 2023 G, Bonita Vista/ Southbay Show 16u

Event: Pangos 32

A name to monitor in San Diego, as Figueroa is a polished scorer, but a very good shooter from deep.

Caden Harris, 6-5 2022 SG, Summit (OR)/ Players Play 17u

Event: Pangos 32

Harris, a physically well built knockdown shooter, hit four three keys in the second half to help Players Play beat Triple Threat.

Most underrated

Dontrell Johnson, 6-4 2022 G, Bonanza/ Simply Fundamental 17

Event: All West Live

Shaking off a scary fall in the opening half of his first game, Johnson came back and continued to fill it up from every level, especially from midrange.

Michael Barragan, 6-3 2023 G, Bonita Vista/ Southbay Show 16u

Event: Pangos 32

Barragan scores it effectively from two levels: he is a solid catch-and-shoot threat and he can get downhill attacking closeouts in the halfcourt and finish at the rim. Sneaky bouncy too.

Jaden Henley, 6-5 2022 G, Colony (CA)/ Team Inland

Event: Pangos 32

I watched with a mid-major coach as Henley singlehandedly kept Team Inland in the game with his relentless, crafty scoring. His footwork, handle and ability to get into the paint (right hand dominant) are uncanny.

Most Explosive

Ariik Mawien, 6-3 2023 W Capistrano Valley Christian/ So-Cal All Stars

Event: Pangos 32

In SCA’s close win over Team Inland, it was Mawien who provided some highlight finishes in the halfcourt and transition. The long, developing wing has fierce explosiveness above the rim.

Jamar Howard, 6-4 2023 G, Mission College Prep/ WCE Central Cal

Event: All West Live

A skilled scorer and passer, Howard’s bounciness caught players off guard at the showcase. Very high upside.
