Final Score: Leo 57 – FW Canterbury 44
Leo came out ready to put this game away early. Behind a 7 point first quarter by junior Lane Reed, Leo took a 12-6 lead into the second. Reed was outscoring and outrebounding Canterbury through the first quarter. In the second quarter, it was more of the same. Leo was causing turnovers and expanding their lead. Jeremy Davison got in on the action and helped stretch the Leo lead to 27-11 heading into the half. Now Davison was outscoring Canterbury 13 to 11 through the first two quarters.
Coming out in the second half, it seemed that Leo was in complete control and would dominate again but Canterbury’s bench had other things in mind. Canterbury got great production off their bench from sophomores Lex Skekloff and Camdyn Cobler. Canterbury outscored Leo 14-11 in the third quarter to cut into the lead. Canterbury still trailed by 13 heading into the fourth quarters, 38-25.
Canterbury came out with energy and focus in the fourth quarter again and cut the lead down to six points. Leo came roaring back with a pair of triples from senior Will Moreau. Leo made their layups and plays down the line to win the game 57-44 over Canterbury.
MVP: Will Moreau (Leo)
There weren’t any super stellar performances on the offensive end in this contest but Will Moreau seemed to be in the mix on multiple different occasions and filled multiple columns of the stat sheet. Moreau finished with 9 points (3-6 3FG), 6 rebounds (4 defensive and 2 offensive), a game high 4 steals, and 4 assists. The senior guard is a knock-down shooter from deep with the ability to get into the lane and finish with a floater over the defense. Moreau made some big shots down the line for the Lions that helped them extend the lead back to double digits when Canterbury started to go on a little run.
Best Offensive Performance: Jeremy Davison (Leo)
Jeremy Davison is one of those guys who can score quickly. Davison was the second leading scorer for the game with 13 and they all came in the second quarter. Davison finished with 13 points (2-3 2FG, 3-6 3FG, and 0-1 FT), 5 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Davison never really seemed to get in the flow of the game but he did manage to make his presence felt in at least one of the quarters. Jeremy will be the leading scorer for Leo this season and will draw a lot of attention from opposing defenses. He will have to find ways to stay involved on the offensive end for Leo to be successful.
Best Defensive Performance: Will Moreau (Leo)
Moreau did a little bit of everything but what was really impressive was his ability to read Canterbury’s offense and step in to make steals. Moreau’s help side defense was in full affect tonight as he lead the game with 4 steals. Will also rebounded well for an undersized guard and helped put an end to at least 8 possessions for Canterbury tonight (4 steals and 4 defensive rebounds). Moreau has put in the work and effort in the off-season to improve his strength and quickness and it has helped him find a solid role with this team. Confusing as to why he didn’t see much time in the fourth quarter but he is a good player for Leo.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Michael Brothers (FW Canterbury)
Michael Brothers may have struggled from the field in the early-going but he managed to put that all aside and help his team make some runs in the second half. Brother finished with 11 points (3-8 2FG, 0-1 3FG, and 5-6 FT), 6 rebounds (3 defensive and 3 offensive), 2 assists, and 2 steals. He handled the ball a lot for Canterbury tonight and initiated most of their offense. Brothers stands at a generous 5’9” but doesn’t let that slow him down going to the basket strong.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Luke Stoller (Leo)
Luke Stoller came off-the-bench for the Lions tonight but let the game come naturally to him. The 6’3” junior wing seems to have a good feel for the game and had his offense working tonight. Stoller finished with 9 points (3-4 2FG and 1-3 3FG), 2 defensive rebounds, and 2 steals. Luke shoots the ball well from deep and his length is bothersome on the defensive end. He is decently athletic and rebounds the ball at a decent rate off-the-bench. Stoller will be a key guy for Leo moving forward.
Best Passer: Eli Steiner (Leo)
Eli Steiner is Leo’s starting point guard and he rarely comes out of the game. Steiner is a small guard standing at 5’11” but has strength and quickness to make up for it. Steiner lead the game with 9 assists and always seemed to be under control going to the basket. Steiner finished with 5 points (1-6 2FG and 3-4 FT), 4 rebounds (3 defensive and 1 offensive), a game high 9 assists, and 1 steal. Steiner struggled to get his own offense going but managed to keep Leo in the game but creating for others.
Best Intangibles: Cam Kreiger (FW Canterbury)
Cam Kreiger was the focal point of the offense for Canterbury as they put him in the high post and tried to get him a touch on every possession to either drive or find a cutter. Kreiger finished with a team high 12 points (5-8 2FG, 0-4, 3FG, and 2-4 FT), 2 defensive rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Although his stat line wasn’t overly impressive, Kreiger was able to get the crowd engaged with a second half charge. Kreiger was also the most vocal guy on the floor for Canterbury on both ends of the floor.
Best Rebounder: Lane Reed (Leo)
Lane Reed really paced Leo early on with his first quarter performance. Reed had 7 points and 4 rebounds after the first quarter but his production and activity tailed off as the game wore on. Reed finished with a game high 15 points (5-13 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 2-2F FT), a game high 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Reed was the most aggressive player from either team going to the glass on both ends and that was the major reason he lead the game in rebounds. He has good hands and decent athletic ability but his aggressiveness is what gets him the majority of his rebounds.
Best Underclassmen: Lex Skekloff (FW Canterbury)
Lex Skekloff came off the bench for FW Canterbury and gave them some really good minutes in a game that was dominated by upperclassmen and the Leo Lions. Skekloff finished with 5 points (1-1 2FG and 1-1 3FG), 3 rebounds (1 defensive and 2 offensive), 2 assists, and 2 steals. His minutes and effect all came in the third and fourth quarter when Canterbury began to come back on Leo. Skekloff is a little undersized for the guard position but the sophomore has a chance to be a good basketball player if he gets stronger.
Biggest Takeaway: Leo’s Inability to Extend Leads
Leo completely dominated the first half of this basketball game even though they didn’t look great as a team either. They got a great first quarter from Lane Reed and then a great second quarter from Jeremy Davison but never went back to either of them in the second half. Their game plan seemed to change and Canterbury was able to jump all over them and start making the game close again. If Leo can’t bury a team this season, they will lose a lot of close games because of it.
