Kirkwood opened up the game fast with some good 3-point shooting, but the Flyers took control with their size and held on for a hard-fought 49-44 victory.
Now, here are some of the best from Kirkwood-Lindbergh
MVP: Spencer Levi (Lindbergh) – The 6’6″ 2017 forward scored a game-high 16 points and had a hand in winning the game in several ways. Not only did he get buckets, but he rebounded well and blocked shots and was an active participant in a facets of the game. He is a versatile player who works hard.
Best Offensive Player: Dominic Davis (Lindbergh): The 6’4″ 2017 forward finished with 12 points. He is a strong, physical combo forward who causes match-up problems with his ability to score on the drive and make plays off the dribble against bigger players.
Best Shooter: Brendan Sievers (Kirkwood) – The 6’5″ 2017 Stretch 4 knocked down four 3-pointers during the game. He nailed his first two shots of the game to help the Pioneers to an early lead. When the Pioneers were trying to mount a late rally, he made two more 3-pointers down the stretch. Kirkwood’s 2017 guard Sam Gunn also knocked down three 3-pointers during the game.
Best Young Prospect (2019, 2020): Erik Lahm (Lindbergh) – A 6’9″ 2019 forward, Lahm scored 12 points, mostly on finishes around the basket. Not only is he tall, but he is very long and active around the basket. He runs the court well and blocks his share of shots. He will continue to develop into quite a player as he gains more strength.
Best Defensive Player: Tahj Telfair (Kirkwood) – An outstanding football player on the Pionners’ state-championship football team, the 6’5″ 2017 forward is also an excellent defender in basketball. He had a number of highlight reel blocked shots when he pinned the ball against the glass. He is strong and athletic and can move his feet.
Best Match Up: Dominic Davis vs. Tahj Telfair – This was fun to watch as Davis is a big, strong combo forward who usually gives opposing bigs a hard time with his ability to put the ball on the floor. In Telfair, Davis met up with a player who was a little bigger, but equally strong and athletic enough to guard him in the post and the perimeter. It was good stuff.
Best Floor General: Ryan Lacefield (Lindbergh): The 2017 point guard only scored six points, but he did an excellent job of running the show and keeping control of the game’s tempo. He is strong with the ball and he rarely turned it over. When Kirkwood rallied late, he kept the ball in his hands and knocked down four free throws to seal the victory. Just a very nice floor game with poise and savvy.
Unsung Player: Theo Price (Lindbergh) – A physical 6’0″ 2018 guard, Price missed much of the first half with foul trouble. In the second half, he contributed seven big points and played with great activity on the defensive end. A real good hustle player.
Difference in Game: The size of Lindbergh proved to be too much as they went 6’9″, 6’6″ and 6’5″ on the front line. They blocked several Kirkwood shots in the lane and forced the Pioneers to become a 3-point shooting team.
