Edinburgh was hot from behind the arc making 11 three-pointers and only eight from inside the arc. They were led by senior Addison Lollar who hit seven from deep for all of his points on the night.
Monrovia was led by senior Luke Smith who hit six of his own on the way to a game high 32 points. Sophomore Max Newman was big as well scoring 17 points and pulling in 12 rebounds.
Leading scorers: Edinburgh: Addison Lollar 21, Justin Fosskuhl 16. Monrovia: Luke Smith 32, Max Newman 17.
Leading rebounders: Edinburgh: Coltan Henderson 5. Monrovia: Max Newman 12, Luke Seber 9.
MVP: Luke Smith (Monrovia)
Smith was on fire in this one. Hands down the best player on the floor. He was really good off the bounce and his a few pull-up three-pointers. Smith was 12-16 from the floor and 6-8 from deep. He added in an assist and three steals. An all-around solid performance.
Best offensive performance: Max Newman (Monrovia)
Newman controlled the paint on both ends. All of his shots were inside the paint and he brought down a ton of offensive rebounds. Did not have to stretch it out at all because he was just powering into the paint. Was a lot more fluid than the last time I saw him and this game impressed me.
Best defensive performance: Parker Bryant (Edinburgh)
Bryant was solid on defense. Struggled on offense but made up for it by having five steals. He was very active and had quick hands on the ball. Jumped a couple passing lanes and had quite a few tipped passes.
Play of the Game: Luke Smith hits a three
As Edinburgh was making a charge in the fourth quarter, Smith hit a pull-up three to take away all the momentum.
Best underclassman: Max Newman (Monrovia)
Newman was so impressive I had to list him twice. Coming off the bench last year he was a little shaky, this year he grew two inches and is a little thicker. He can guard wings which helps show his athleticism. A 2019 kid to watch.
Best under-the-radar performance: Justin Fosskuhl (Edinburgh)
It’s hard to be under-the-radar scoring 16 points, but with three players in the game scoring more that’s just what he was. Fosskuhl was pretty good at attacking the basket and added in two steals and three assists. He stepped up as a big second scorer on Edinburgh tonight.
Best passer: Zach Cottrell (Monrovia)
Cottrell was the glue guy for Monrovia tonight. He had just two assists but he really kept the offense going when he had the ball. Found the open guys who did not look open.
Best shooter: Addison Lollar (Edinburgh)
Lollar hit seven threes and went 7-9 from deep. He has a nice stroke for a small kid. Looks like the team’s best scorer but it will all come from behind the line since he can’t really finish inside due to how small he is.
Best rebounder: Luke Seber (Monrovia)
Seber has been known as a good rebounder for awhile now. Not assertive at all on offense but can really pull down the boards. Would have had more but Newman was hitting the glass hard tonight.
Best takeaway: Edinburgh is in for some struggles this year with a lack of size. The tallest player is just 6’3 and they do not really have any scorers on their team besides Lollar when he’s hot. Monrovia can really cause match-up problems with their two big boys inside and with Smith on the perimeter. Team’s must be on their game to beat them this year.
